Abstract: 818,641. Rollers. IDEAL ROLLER & MANUFACTURING CO. Oct. 25, 1956, No. 32570/56. Class 42 (2). [Also in Groups XVI and XXIV] A plate dampener roller for use in a lithographic machine comprises a yieldable base around which is wrapped a vegetable parchment paper covering. The roller may be made of rubber 21 bonded to a shaft 28 and the parchment paper 32 may be in the form of a long strip wound helically round the roller, as in Fig. 6, or a rectangular piece wrapped with its long edge parallel to the axis of the roller. The paper is wound on to the roller whilst it is wet and need not be secured to the roller at its leading edge. If the roller is then rotated whilst in contact with a steel roller, the overlapping parts of the paper become so matted together that a smooth surface is produced at the joint and the overall dimensions of the roller are sufficiently uniform to coact with the resilient rubber base in providing contact at all times with the surface of the plate during actual printing. If the paper is wound helically it is trimmed at each end of the roller and secured there on reduced portions 34 of the roller by adhesive tape or rubber bands.
