Preferably ionically compatible adjunctives are used; zirconium silicate, calcium pyrophosphate, insoluble metaphosphates, alumina and resinous materials have been used as abrasives, being between 0.5-95% by weight of the total composition. The conventional binder substances, thickening agents, sudsing agents, humectants, flavoring and sweetening agents may also be added. The toxicity of In Zr F 7 in mice is shown to be less than 3 times the toxicity of NaF, In Zr F 7 is more soluble and its solutions more stable than prior art anticariogenic agents

Abstract: The novel compound stannous fluorozirconate, SnZrF6, may be prepared by reacting equimolar quantities of SnF2 and ZrF4 in aqueous solution and isolating the product by evaporation. Alternatively, SnF2 and ZrF4 may be heat-fused. The white, water-soluble crystals of SnZrF6 may be incorporated in oral compositions since the compound has high anticaries efficacy.ALSO:An oral composition for caries prophylaxis comprises 0.1 to 50% of stannous fluorozirconate, SnZrF6, and an ionically compatible carrier. Dentifrice compositions, containing say 0.1 to 1% SnZrF6, incorporate abrasives such as particulate condensation products of melamine and urea or formaldehyde, calcium pyrophosphate, calcium, metaphosphate, calcium oxyapatite, b -and a - tricalcium orthophosphates, insoluble metaphosphates and alumina, together with a foaming agent, binder and flavouring. Colloidal magnesium silicate and a humectant may also be included. The pH values of the aqueous oral compositions are preferably in the range 4.0 to 5.5.

Abstract: A prophylactic dental paste composition comprises zirconium silicate as a cleaning and polishing agent and a fluoride-containing anti-cariogenic adjuvant, e.g. NaF, SnF4, KF, InF3, PdF2, FeF2, LiF, Na2SiF6, CaZrF6, Na2ZrF6, K2ZrF6, NaSnF3, NaBF4, NaTiF5, K2GeF6, Zr(GeF6)2, SnClF, Sn2ClF3 and preferably SnZrF6 and SnF2. Alternatively, the zirconium silicate is formulated as a base composition so that a freshly prepared aqueous solution of the anticariogenic component may be admixed therewith prior to use. The base compositions also include conventional bleaching pigments, e.g. TiO2; binders or thickeners, humectants and flavouring agents including sweeteners. In both types of composition, the final product preferably contains 0.50-2.4 parts by weight of zirconium silicate and 0.05-1 parts by weight of fluoride-containing anticariogenic adjuvant.

The composition may also contain calcium pyrophosphate; anhydrous calcium hydrogen phosphate; calcium hydrogen phosphate dihydrate; substantially water-impervious, cross-linked; thermosetting, highly polymerized synthetic resins; insoluble sodium metaphosphate; calcium carbonate; mixtures of talc and at least a minor amount of tremolite, CaMg 3 (SiO 3 ) 4 ; condensation products of NH 3 and P 4 O 10 ; fluoride-containing anticariogenic adjuvants; and other conventional additives.

Preferably, the composition comprises up to 5% by weight of a dental plaque removing agent, e.g. Na 2 CO 3 , NaHCO 3 or CHCl 3 , and the fine ZrSiO, is in the form of relatively smooth particles whereas the coarse particles are relatively rough.

Abstract: A chewing gum is disclosed which is for cleaning and imparting a high degree of polish to the teeth; the chewing gum comprises a chewing gum base, at least one non-toxic source of acid in a particular amount, and calcined kaolin particles, the median diameter of which is approximately 2 micrometres or less, and substantially all of the particles being less than approximately 20 micrometres in diameter. Such a chewing gum cleans and imparts a high degree of polish to the teeth without unduly abrading or scratching them, When regularly chewed, such a gum, in addition to cleaning and polishing the dental enamel, can also inhibit the reformation of dental plaque.
