Abstract: Fine particles of dust and other pollutants in gas streams entering a duct (10) are agglomerated to form larger particles which are more easily filtered in downstream processing. Particles in successive portions of the gas stream are charged by an AC ionizer (14) with opposite polarity, and the gas stream is introduced into an Evase portion (12) to slow it down. Particles of different sizes have differential deceleration and therefore mix generally in the direction of flow, aided by vibrators (13), leading to agglomeration of oppositely-charged particles.

Abstract: Interaction between two different species of particle(s) in a fluid stream i s promoted by generating turbulent eddies (1, 2) in a fluid stream. The turbulente eddies are designed to be of such size and/or intensity that the different sized particle(s) are entrained into the eddies to significantly different extents and forced to follow different trajectories (3, 4), increasing the likelihood of collisions and interactions. Optimum collision rates will occur for a system which maintains a Stokes Number (St) much less than 1 for one sized particle, and or order 1 or greater for the other sized particle. The invention has particular application in air pollution control, whereby agglomeration of fine particles into larger particles is promoted, subsequent to their removal.

Abstract: La interaccion entre dos especies diferentes de particulas en una corriente de fluido se promueve al generar corrientes (1, 2) turbulentas en una corriente de fluido. Las corrientes de turbulencia estan disenadas para tener tal tamano y/o intensidad que las particulas de diferentes tamanos entran dentro de las corrientes a niveles muy diferentes y se fuerzan a seguir diferentes trayectorias (3, 4), lo que aumenta la probabilidad de colisiones e interacciones. Las proporciones optimas de colisiones ocurriran para un sistema que mantiene un numero Stokes (St) mucho menor que 1 para una particula de un tamano y/o dentro del orden de 1 o mayor para otro tamano de particula. La invencion tiene particular aplicacion en el control de contaminacion del aire, por lo cual se promueve la aglomeracion de particulas finas en particulas mas grandes, y despues a su remocion.
