Abstract: A catheter assembly for measuring a fluid pressure in a body cavity includes an optical converter (39) responsive to an electrical power source for energizing a light-emitting diode (45) which has drift characteristics which vary in response to temperature. An optical sensor (72) is adapted to receive the light from the light-emitting diode and to provide a measurement signal indicative of the fluid pressure in the cavity. This measurement signal has undesirable characteristics related to the thermal drift characteristics of the diode. A detection circuit (93, 109) detects the measurement signal and provides an output signal indicative of fluid pressure in the cavity. A special filter (63) is included in this detection circuit which has optical characteristics that substantially offset the undesirable characteristics of the measurement signal, so that the output signal is substantially independent of the temperature of the diode. A power conversion (36) circuit enables the assembly to be energized by an excitation voltage which is provided in several different forms by various monitors.

Abstract: A gas column pressure-measuring catheter (12) which is insertable into a mammalian body for purposes of transmitting pressure changes from a location within the mammalian body to a pressure sensor (14) which is either incorporated into, or connected to, the catheter (12). In a preferred embodiment, the gas column pressure-measuring catheter (12) comprises an elongate catheter body (20) having a gas-filled lumen (22) extending longitudinally therethrough, and a gas-filled membrane-walled chamber (38, 40) positioned on the catheter body in communication with the gas-filled lumen such that pressure changes exerted against the outer surface of the membrane-walled chamber will result in the transmission of pressure changes through the gas-filled catheter lumen (22). The gas-filled membrane-walled chamber may be located on the side wall of the catheter body (20) or on the distal end of the catheter body (20).

Abstract: A probe (10) adapted for direct insertion into the tissue of a patient, includes a needle (21) having walls defining an interior lumen (38) and a closed tip with a generally conical configuration. At least one sensor (14) capable of measuring a particular physiological parameter is disposed in the lumen. At least one window (41) is formed in the needle wall (36) along a path between the tissue and the sensor. A filler material (52) disposed along the path inhibits the passage of air or blood while facilitating transmission of the particular physiological parameter of interest such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, pH, and pressure.

Abstract: A dye matrix is provided for use in an optical sensor. In the preferred embodiment sufficient of a gas-sensitive organometallic aromatic-containing fluorescent dye is dissolved in an organosilane polymer permeable to the gas to measure concentrations of oxygen or other gases in bodily tissue. The polymer contains sufficient aromatic substituents to prevent the dye from crystallizing and sufficient crosslinker to prevent an increase in turbidity in the dye matrix in an aqueous environment for up to 72 hours. A reference fluorescent dye can also be dissolved in the dye matrix to aid in screening out the "noise" introduced by muscle movement when the sensor is used in a tissue probe, such as a tissue oxygen probe.
