    Abstract: Method of making an acoustic transducer (20) includes the steps of: a) assembling a previously polarized crystal (36) with a pair of solid circular metal plates (24, 28) positioned to sandwich the piezoelectric ceramic crystal (36) between them, wherein an epoxy adhesive is interposed between the metal plates (24, 28) and the piezoelectric ceramic crystal (36) to form an acoustic transducer assembly (20); b) curing the acoustic transducer assembly (20) at temperatures less than 150 degrees centigrade; c) encapsulating the acoustic transducer assembly (20) in a flexible case with a polyurethane potting sealant to form a potted assembly; d) curing the potted assembly at temperatures less than 150 degrees centigrade to form a hydrophone.

    Abstract: A solid marine seismic cable assembly (10) includes a cable (16) hydrophone housings (20), a buoyant filler (24), and an outer protective jacket (28). The cable includes a load-bearing fiber bundle (32), data-transmitting wires (36), power conductors (38), optical fibers (40), and a protective sheath (42). The data-transmitting wires (36), power conductors (38), and optical fibers (40) surround the load-bearing fiber bundle (32). The protective sheath (42) surrounds the assembly of the data-transmitting wires (36), power conductors (38), optical fibers (40), and the load-bearing fiber bundle (32). The hydrophone housings (20) affix around the cable (10) in a spaced-apart relationship. Each hydrophone housing (20) includes a hydrophone module (56), and each hydrophone module contains a hydrophone (14). The buoyant filler (24) surrounds the cable (16), and separates the hydrophone housing (20). The outer protective jacket (28) surrounds the hydrophone housing (20) and the buoyant filler (24), enclosing the cable (16) assembly.

    Abstract: A low-profile hydrophone module for a marine seismic system (10) includes a block (108) having a curved surface (118) and a receiving surface (130) in which an open cavity (134) is disposed, a hydrophone assembly, to which lead wires (154) attach, disposed in the cavity, lead wires which pass out of the cavity, and a sound-transmitting material which fills the cavity. In another feature, the hydrophone assembly includes a hydrophone and a baffle material (162), the baffle material enclosing the hydrophone, the cavity is sealed aroud the lead wires, the sound-transmitting material is oil (170), and a cover sealingly affixes over the cavity. In another feature, the hydrophone assembly includes a hydrophone and a frame, the cavity is sealed around the lead wires, the sound-transmitting material is a potting sealant (135), and a cover sealingly affixes over the cavity.
