Abstract: The underwater acoustic signal tracking appts. synchronises the tracking appts. to a synchronising event. A transducer converts underwater acoustic energy into electrical energy. A receiver connected to the transducer extracts pulse signals from the electrical energy. The pulse signals represent individual acoustic pulses having predetermined characteristics propagated underwater in response to the synchronising event. The receiver is enabled during an adjustable time window relative to the synchronising event. A pulse detector is connected to the receiver and has an adjustable detection threshold characteristic varying within the time window. The pulse detector selects a maximum pulse signal whose amplitude exceeds the detection threshold characteristic according to a predetermined criterion during the time window. A time of reception is assigned relative to the associated synchronising event to the maximum pulse signal. The detection threshold characteristic of the pulse detector is adjusted as a function of the time of reception of the maximum pulse signal.
