An electron beam harmonic generator comprises means for exciting fast mode oscillations at or at one-half of the cyclotron frequency in an unloaded hollow pipe waveguide along the axis of which an electron beam is projected in the presence of an axial magnetic field and a cavity resonator tuned to a harmonic of the cyclotron frequency and downstream of the waveguide. The beam is annular or solid and is subjected to an axial magnetic field in at least the waveguide and preferably also in the resonator. The gun may be magnetically shielded and offset from the axis, Fig. 2 (not shown), in which case the magnetic field also extends from the gun to the waveguide. The waveguide supports the TE 11 mode (circular waveguide excited at # c ) or the TE 21 mode (rectangular waveguide excited at # c /2). The waveguide and cavity resonator may be an integral block of copper forming part of the tube envelope.
