Abstract:
A device comprising a flexible elongate member having proximal (72) and distal extremities (41). A flexible coil spring is provided having proximal and distal extremities. The proximal extremity of the coil spring is secured to the distal extremity of the flexible elongate member. A shape memory alloy element (46) is disposed within and extends substantially longitudinally of the coil spring (36). The shape memory alloy element has a memory which makes it attempt to assume a straight shape when an electrical current is passed through and heats the same. The shape memory alloy element (46) also has a stiffness which increases with the temperature of the element. An electrical current supply (67) is provided for supplying an electrical current to the shape memory alloy element for changing the stiffness of the shape memory alloy element to thereby stiffen the distal extremity of the flexible elongate member.
Abstract:
A low profile balloon-on-a-wire catheter (11) comprising a flexible elongate tubular member (12) having proximal and distal extremities (13, 14). A balloon inflation/deflation lumen extends from the proximal extremity to the distal extremity. An inflatable balloon (26) is carried by the distal extremity of the flexible elongate tubular member (12). The flexible elongate tubular member (12) carries means which establishes communication between the lumen and the interior of the inflatable balloon (31). A removable inflation device (51) is removably secured to the proximal extremity of the flexible elongate tubular member (12) for supplying an inflation fluid to the lumen for inflating and deflating the balloon (26). The removable inflation device (51) forms a high pressure seal with the proximal extremity of the flexible elongate tubular member (12). The removable inflation device (51) is free of obstructions so that another balloon catheter can be advanced over the proximal extremity of the flexible elongate tubular member (12) which serves as stand-alone guide wire. The distal extremity of the catheter is formed so that it is mechanically shapable or can be electrically deflectable to facilitate steering of the distal extremity.
Abstract:
This invention is a flexible elongate device comprising a flexible elongate member with proximal (13) and distal (56) extremities. A shape memory element (31) is disposed in the flexible elongate member and is capable of assuming martensitic and austenitic states and has first and second portions. A layer of conductive material (36) is formed on at least one of said portions. The layer has a conductivity greater than that of the shape memory element. Electrical current is supplied to the shape memory element. The conductive (36) layer serves to conduct current and shunts current flow around that portion of the shape memory element (31) having the layer of conductive material thereon.
Abstract:

This invention is a guide wire assembly for use in a vascular system of a patient in a medical procedure comprising a guide wire adapted to extend into a patient's vascular system. The guide wire has a proximal extremity (12) extending out of the patient. A guide wire extension (13) is provided which has a distal extremity. A connector (36) is provided for forming a repetitive connection between the proximal extremity of the guide wire (12) and the distal extremity of the guide wire extension. The connector is formed of a male (31) and female (16) parts. At least one of the male and female parts is formed of a super-elastic memory material.
Abstract:
The present invention is a guidewire (16) for use in a medical procedure, and for use with the power supply (18) comprising a flexible elongate member (22) having proximal and distal extremities, and having a bore (26) extending from the proximal extremity to the distal extremity. A core wire (28) extends through the bore (26) of the flexible elongate tubular member (22). A coil assembly (61) is mounted on the distal extremity of the flexible elongate member (22) and ends in a rounded tip (48). An actuator member (64) has at least a portion thereof disposed in the coil assembly (61).
Abstract:
Device comprising an elongate tubular member having proximal and distal extremities and having a section with a plurality of lumens extending from the proximal extremity to the section. At least two conductive elements are disposed in the lumens in said section of the elongate tubular member. The conductive elements are formed of a conductive metal alloy having a recoverable strain in excess of 1 % and exhibiting a martensitic phase transformation. Electrical current is supplied to the at least one conductive element. The section has at least one portion. A current conductor is carried by said at least one conductive element for shunting current flow around the at least one portion of said at least one conductive element.

This invention is a low profile catheter (21) comprising a flexible elongate tubular member (22) having proximal and distal extremities (23, 24), and having a guide wire lumen (26), and at least one balloon inflation lumen (27) extending from the proximal extremity to the distal extremity (24), said at least one balloon inflation lumen being offset eccentrically with respect to said guide wire lumen (26) having at least one inflatable balloon (31) formed thereon and having an interior in communication with said at least one balloon inflation lumen (27); said guide wire lumen (26) extending through said at least one inflatable balloon (30) and being offset eccentrically with respect to said at least one inflatable balloon (31).
Abstract:
This invention has a guidewire extension capability for use in a medical procedure having a guidewire (12) and a guidewire extension (13). The guidewire comprises a flexible elongate cylindrical member (16) having proximal and distal extremities. A portion of the distal extremity is formed of a material having high torque ability and high push ability. The guidewire extension comprises a flexible elongate cylindrical member formed of a shape memory material. A major portion of the flexible elongate cylindrical member of the guidewire extension has a shape memory in the form of a coil so that when it is free it will assume a shape memory coil. A junction (14) is formed between the proximal extremity of the guidewire (17) and the distal extremity of the guidewire extension (33) to the guidewire.
Abstract:
An angioplasty catheter (11) comprising a flexible elongate tubular member (12) having proximal and distal extremities (13 and 14). A lumen (16) therein extends from the proximal extremity (13) to the distal extremity (14). First and second balloons (21 and 22) are carried by said distal extremity (14) and are coaxially disposed with respect to each other on the distal extremity (14) of the flexible elongate tubular member (12).
