Abstract: The optical reader is for use with a card carrying 2 tracks of transparent markings at least one of which provides clock signals either as a clock track or as a self-clocking data track. Temporary reversal of movement of a card, e.g. when being manually inserted, may be detected in the usual way using spaced sensors for the clock track. On insertion of a card a switch-over from low power standby pulses to high power pulses at a level above their normally acceptable by the light sources under continuous operation may be made.
