Phosphonite ligands, catalyst compositions containing such ligands and a hydroformylation process using such catalyst compositions involving a bidentate phosphonite ligand having the structure represented by formula (I) wherein the Ar groups are either the same or different unbridged organic aromatic groups such as substituted or unsbustituted phenyl, substituted or unsubstituted naphthyl, mixtures thereof or the like are disclosed. The ligands in combination with a Group VIII metal or Group VIII metal compound are particularly useful in a hydroformylation process for reacting an ethylenically unsaturated compound to produce linear alkenals at high selectivity.

A process for making alkyl 6-aminocaproate by hydroformylating 3-pentenenitrile to produce 3-, 4-, and 5-formylvaleronitrile (FVN mixture), converting the FVN mixture to alkyl 3-, 4-, and 5-cyanovalerate by either oxidative esterification of the FVN mixture or oxidation of the FVN mixture followed by esterification; isolating alkyl 5-cyanovalerate; and hydrogenating the alkyl 5-cyanovalerate to produce alkyl 6-aminocaproate. The resulting alkyl 6-aminocaproate can be cyclized to produce caprolactam.

Disclosed in a process for making (1) a compound of the formula NC-CH2-CH2-CH2-CH2-CO2R', wherein R' is H or C1 to C12 alkyl, or (2) adipic acid or (3) dimethyl adipate, using as the substrate, 3-pentenenitrile, (2) 3-pentenoic acid or methyl 3-pentenoate, respectively, by contacting the substrate with carbon monoxide and a nucleophile in the presence of a Group VIII metal, a selected ligand, and an acid promoter. The nucleophile, which (a) an alcohol or water, or (b) water or (c) methanol, respectively, in the presence of a Group VIII metal, preferably palladium, a selected phosphine ligand, and an acid promoter.

Supported bis(phosphorus) ligands are disclosed for use in hydroformylation reactions, including the hydroformylation of olefins. Catalysts are formed when the ligands are complexed with a catalytically active metal (e.g., rhodium or iridium).
