    Abstract: A collector 12 for obtaining hydrogen emanating from a surface 11 comprises a flexible plate with guide channels on it's hydrogen receiving face along which collected hydrogen is transported to a detector 15. The flexible plate can be fabricated from stainless steel, metallized plastic or may be a plastic and metal laminate. Utility is in collecting and detecting hydrogen flux from steel or iron surfaces e.g. in the form of a pipeline 11. The collector 12 can be clamped to the surface 11 by magnets.

    Abstract: A system for detecting a leak in a container 18 comprises means for extracting a sample of gas from an enclosure 11 surrounding the container and delivering it to a photo-ionisation detector (PID) 16. The delivery means may include apparatus for extracting and diluting a sub-sample of the gas sample with a carrier gas CG, such as a gas-driven Venturi extraction system 15. The system may include an automatic purging arrangement, which is triggered when the detector indicates an excessive amount of contaminating material.

In the complete Specification of our British Patent No: 2,312,279 (P1448) there is described and claimed a hydrogen detection system including a collection enclosure to be placed against the steel surface to be tested and for gathering into a carrier gas passed therethrough hydrogen emanating from that surface. The system is satisfactory for use in connection with flat surfaces, but less so for surfaces that are not flat. The present invention seeks to deal with the conformity problem by making the collector (12) a flexible plate (21) on the receptor face of which are constructed raised grooves or high spots, which may be presented approximately parallel to an approximately flat surface or approximately tangential to a curved surface, and which form guiding channels (201) along which hydrogen emanating from the surface (11) underlying the plate can be drawn and sent to an associated detector system (15).
