Abstract: Apparatus is described comprising a combination of: an envelope 532 having a solid dielectric interior wall and an inert gas therein; and first, second and third electrodes 534, 536, 538 outside the wall. The envelope is divided into first and second chambers connected in fluid flow relation with each other by a neck 540 in the dielectric interior wall, and the pressure in the second chamber and the neck is such that the second chamber is at a lower pressure than the first chamber. The electrodes 534, 538 outside the wall are respectively capacitively coupled to regions of the first and second chambers remote from the neck through the dielectric wall, and the electrode 536 outside of the wall is capacitively coupled to the neck through the dielectric wall. A voltage is applied between the first and third electrodes to provide a discharge in the first chamber between the first and third electrodes, a voltage being applied between the first and second electrodes to cause charged particles in the discharge to be accelerated through the neck and the second chamber to the second electrode.

Abstract: Disclosed are many different arrangements in which, in a vacuum of gas-filled enclosure by pulsing a cathode with respect to an anode or counter electrode, there is generated from the discharge therebetween high electrical charge density entities, called EV's in the space patton which comprise discrete, self-contained, negatively charged bundles of electrons. In the channel cource 900 shown, Figs 62 and 63, for generating EV's a ceramic base 901 has a guide channel 903 therein in which cathode 902 is located and successive dynodes 905 are provided underlying the channel 903 with a counter electrode 906 on the opposite side of the base to the channel. Cathode 902 may be replaced with a photon source and a distributed resistor 904 may underlie the channel. In operation, the charge density provided by the initial electron source is multiplied by the successive dynodes, eg with gains of 10 , until it reaches the critical level for forming an EV. The EV, once formed, is constrained to follow the channel guide. The dynodes may comprise metal covered with a thin dielectric layer such as Al2O3 doped with W or Mo. Many different devices utilizing the EV's so generated are disclosed. For example, fig 67 shows an RF generator comprising a guide channel 993 in a dielectric base of serpentine form such that an EV introduced at 991 at constant velocity and constrained to follow the guide emits RF radiation whose duration, frequency and harmonic content is controlled by the shape of the guide. A circulator for RF energy, Figs 65 and 66 (not shown), which can store the RF energy generated, is also disclosed. Other devices disclosed which utilise the EV'S includes flat panel displays, deflection switches, charge storage on memory devices, stepping registers and anologue to digital encoders.

Abstract: Disclosed are many different arrangements in which, in a vacuum or gas-filled enclosure, a cathode 12, Figs 1 and 2, is pulsed with respect to an anode 14 in order to generate from the discharge therebetween high electrical charge density entities, called EV's in the specification, which comprise discrete, self-contained, negatively charged bundles of electrons. Preferably a dielectric surface 10 is provided between the anode and cathode to provide a surface along which the discharge entity propagates. Further electrodes may be provided to control the EV. The cathode may be pointed, as shown, to operate by field emission and may be formed of Cu or Ag wetted with Hg, with a small Hg resevoir incorporated in the electrode, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown). Instead of planer geometry the device may be cylindrically symmetric, Fig. 3, with anode 24 spaced 1 mm from cathode 22 at opposite ends of glass tube 34. With a gas pressure of a few bar or a vacuum of 10 bar, EV's may be produced by applying 2KV pulses of 0.1 mu sec divation to the cathode. Other cathode materials and constructions are disclosed and arrangements for separating, guiding (eg. capacitance, inductance, gaseous or optical guides), launching, selecting, splitting and deflecting EV's are detailed. Embodiments utilising EV's in devices such as oscilloscopes, display tubes, electrodeless tubes, travelling wave tubes, pulse generators, X-ray sources, electron sources and RF sources are also disclosed.

Abstract: Disclosed are high electrical charge density entitles, generated in electrical discharge production. Apparatus for isolating the high charge density entities, selecting them and manipulating them by various guide techniques are disclosed. Utilizing such apparatus, the paths followed by the entities may be switched, or selectively varied in length, for example, whereby the entities may be extensively manipulated. Additional devices are disclosed for the manipulation and exploitation of these entities, including their use with a camera and also in an oscilloscope.

Abstract: Pulse generators are described which comprise a charged particle emitting electrode 604 having a pointed end wefted with electrically conducting liquid; a solid dielectric member 606 having a tip with a pointed opening downstream of the pointed end; and an accelerating electrode 610 on an exterior wall of the dielectric member removed from the opening in the pointed tip; an extractor electrode 612; and an output electrode 622. The accelerating electrode is at a voltage relative to the source and is positioned so that charged particles emitted by the charged particle emitting electrode selectively propagate to the accelerating electrode via a path (a) through the opening and (b) that is reversed in direction after the charged particles pass through the opening. The extractor electrode is positioned downstream of the opening and is at a higher potential than the accelerating electrode, so that only certain of the charged particles emitted by the emitting electrode are incident thereon and others of the charged particles emitted by the emitting electrode are incident on the accelerating electrode. The output electrode is capacitively coupled with the extractor electrode for deriving pulses in response to the charged particles being incident on the extractor electrode.
