Abstract: A automated packaging system that can simultaneously process a single case or a plurality of cases and can be adjusted to accommodate packages and cases of various sizes. Individual packages, are fed to the packaging system on the package conveyor. The packages are recognized by the system when they energize an electric eye which causes the package to be stopped and elevated below a pick and place mechanism. A plurality of cases are stopped and then positioned longitudinally, by stops carried by a first chain, on the case conveyor at locations aligned with the packages that have been stopped and elevated over the package conveyor. The pick and place head is lowered and picks up the packages with vacuum heads. The pick and place heads can be rotated to thus change the attitude of the package. The pick and place mechanism is then moved laterally over the case conveyor and the packages are lowered into the open cases. Empty cases are stopped by stops carried by a second chain, and are queued up on the case conveyor waiting to be moved into packaging position as soon as the filled cases are conveyed away. After the filled cases have been discharged from the case conveyor the first chain is moved into position to stop the next group of empty cases to be moved into the packaging position. By handling one package at a time into each case and by adjusting the case longitudinally relative to the pick and place centerline, and adjusting the pick and place vacuum tube laterally across the case, and by being able to rotate the pick and place vacuum tube to any degree each package can be placed in the case in any position desired. As a result this invention is able to create any desired pattern in the case with packages facing any desired direction and overlapping each other by any degree desired.

Abstract: Techniques for construction and operation of a programmable product picking apparatus are described herein. Such an apparatus picks up product according to a first spacing (e.g., from a conveyor) and releases the product according to a second spacing (e.g., into a carton). In one possible configuration, a fixed matrix plate defines at least first and second rows of slots. Two movable matrix plates, one that moves right-then-left and one that moves left-then-right, move in opposite directions parallel to the fixed matrix plate according to strokes of pneumatic cylinders. Each of a plurality of product pickers is driven by one of the two movable matrix plates. As that plate moves, the product picker is also moved according to a slot defined in the movable matrix plate. Each product picker comes to a stop when it reaches an end of a slot defined in the fixed matrix plate.

An aggregated product receiver assembly comprises a carriage configured for vertical movement to positions adjacent to each product receiver carriage. A pusher assembly, comprising a pusher carriage configured for vertical movement to positions adjacent to each product receiver carriage, contains pushers horizontally moveable to push product from the adjacent product receiver carriage and onto the carriage of the aggregated product receiver assembly for picking by an appropriate apparatus.

Abstract: This machine can automatically load packages of various sizes and shapes into containers in a variety of pack patterns. The machine has a package infeed system that transfers the package to a package locating system that locates the package at a stationary package placement location. A package placement vertical drive picks up the package from the stationary package placement location and can rotate the package about a vertical axis as well as lowering the package into the container and releasing it at the proper location. The package placement vertical drive grips the package by vacuum. It includes a quick attach and detach vacuum head which enables the rapid change-over of the system. The machine includes a case conveyor that moves the container along the longitudinal axis of the machine as well as to the left or right in a direction normal to the longitudinal axis of the machine. This machine, along with the method performed by this machine, has the ability to perform several functions simultaneously which enables it to operate at high speeds.

Abstract: A conveyor mechanism for transferring an article from a primary conveyor to a secondary conveyor that extends in a direction normal to the direction of the primary conveyor. The secondary conveyor has a receiving location at which it receives articles from the first conveyor. The second conveyor has a flat support surface over which a perforated continuous conveyor belt extends. A vacuum plenum is inlayed into the flat support surface and has openings in its upper plate that are located at the receiving location. A vacuum source is connected to the vacuum plenum for creating a vacuum in the vacuum plenum that pulls air through the perforated continuous conveyor belt which causes objects that are deposited on the secondary conveyor at the receiving location to be pulled to and held against the upper surface of the perforated continuous conveyor belt.

Abstract: A lightweight container having a readily removable corrugated sidewall. The inner ply of the sidewall is a corrugated sheet having a selected length and width. A bottom wall member is positioned adjacent the lower axial edge of the inner sheet. A flat outer sheet, of selected length and a width greater than the width of the corrugated inner sheet, is joined to the inner sheet to define the outer ply of the sidewall. The outer sheet projects beyond the lower edge of the inner sheet and is folded against and secured to the bottom wall member, to thereby restrain movement of the bottom wall member. A frangible joint is defined along which the sidewall can be severed from the bottom wall without severing the corrugated inner wall, so that the inner wall adds rigidity without interfering with the ready removal of the sidewall. In the preferred arrangement, the adjacent ends of the inner sheet are in a substantially abutting and unsealed relationship to assist in the opening of the container. A portion of the outer sheet also forms pull-tab means which facilitates the removal of the sidewall from the bottom wall. Further, in the preferred embodiment, the engaged portions of the sheets and bottom wall member are coated with a heat sensitive coating which is self-adhering upon the application of heat in a selected temperature.

Abstract: An apparatus and process for packing a box with a plurality of groups of pouches or other flexible containers and inserting a support shelf between the groups. A conveyor is used to support and convey boxes such that means for inserting a first group of pouches into a box inserts a group of pouches into the top portion of a box. The boxes are then positioned such that means for inserting a support shelf into the box inserts a shelf into the box before means for inserting a second group of pouches inserts a second group of pouches into the box. The support shelf is inserted from the bottom of the box such that the first group of pouches is supported above the second group of pouches and the support legs of the support shelf rest on the bottom of the box.

Abstract: A machine for forming a corrugated package from sheet material including a rotatable corrugation head having a fluted periphery and a front face; corrugating means and sealing means movable into association with the head for corrugating an inner sheet material and sealing two plys of material together, respectively; means for feeding an inner sheet having a selected length and width to the head adjacent said corrugating means and means for feeding an outer sheet having a selected length and width to the head adjacent the sealing means; means for moving a bottom wall member having a selected shape into engagement with the front face of the head and associated with the first and second sheets to form the bottom wall of the package; and means to control the operation of said machine so that the rotation of said head and the function of the above-described components are coordinated to form a corrugated side wall of the package from two sheets simultaneously with the joinder of said side wall with the bottom wall member. The method of forming a corrugated package pursuant to this invention comprises the steps of corrugating an inner sheet of material having a selected width and length into fluted corrugations while forming the sheet into a shape defining a portion of the package side wall; positioning a bottom wall member having an outer edge adjacent the corrugated inner sheet; wrapping an outer sheet of material having a width greater than the width of the inner sheet around the corrugated inner sheet so that a portion of the outer sheet projects over the outer edge of the bottom wall member and; simultaneously joining the outer sheet to the inner sheet and to said bottom wall member so that said sheets form plys of a corrugated side wall and are joined to said bottom wall member to produce a corrugated package.
