    Abstract: A gas discharge display panel for efficiently reproducing a color picture having high brightness and high definition. The display panel comprises a plurality of picture elements arranged in matrix. Each picture element is formed by a set of three discharge units reproducing red, green and blue light respectively. Each discharge unit is coupled to a hollow cathode. The hollow cathode of a suitable size is divided into two portions, i.e., a set of display hollow cathodes each of which forms main part of the discharge unit, and a scanning hollow cathode which couples the set of display hollow cathodes and operates for obtaining preparatory discharge. Said two portions of the hollow cathode are jointly operated so as to obtain a large discharge current supply at low voltage and in a small surface area. Thus a practical gas discharge display panel having high density discharge unit arrangement is realized and which is able to increase the luminance by about several tens of per cent more than the conventional one and also being able to be assembled in a simple manner by simplifying the panel construction with unified parts.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To increase an amount of ultraviolet rays generated by discharge, and make the promotion of high intensity and high efficiency, by mixing a nitrogen gas in the parent rare gas at partial pressure of 0.5-10mmHg, and providing a sealing pressure of the whole gas to above 50mmHg. CONSTITUTION:The discharge of sealed gas generates an ultraviolet ray, that makes a phosphor luminous. The sealed gas is constituted by a mixed gas between nitrogen gas and rare gas of more than one kind. A pressure of the sealed gas is made at least 50mmHg, and a partial pressure of the nitrogen gas made 0.5- 10mmHg. Helium or argon is suitable for use as the rare gas.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To decrease the heat capacity and the heat conductivity for the cathode of the discharge cell and to attach the electron radioactive meterial of a small working function onto the surface with the self-heating via the ion impact, and thus to ensure the function as the hot-cathode. CONSTITUTION:The material of W, Ni or the like featuring a small heat capacity and low heat conductivity is formed into the coil or mesh shape. The electron radioactive material featuring a small working function of under 3.5eV such as the alkali earth metal, alkali metal, lanthanum rare earth or the like is coated on the surface to form the cathode. This cathode is then bombarded with positive ion caused by the discharge and heated to secure the function as a self-heating cathode, thus the number of the discharge electrode being reduced greatly. As for the electron radioactive material used for the display panel, the alkali earth metal's azide and K azide represented by Ba(N3)2 or the azide of the alkali metal represented by Na azide are used suitably. With such structure, the dispersion of the cathode material is reduced, thus obtaining a gas discharge display panel featuring a long life time and reduced power consumption.
