Abstract: An absorbent article 1, such as a catamenial napkin, includes a top sheet 2 having a liquid permeable area 2A, a liquid impermeable sheet 3 and a liquid retentive absorbent element 4 interposed between them which together form an absorbent pad of generally elongate shape. The article further includes a pair of lugs or flaps 3A extending outwardly from respective longitudinal side edges of the absorbent pad and connected to the top sheet 2 at areas 2B thereof which are impermeable and are spaced inwardly from the longitudinal side edges of the absorbent element. The lugs may be constituted by part of the liquid impermeable sheet (as shown), by portions of the top sheet and liquid impermeable sheet connected together, or by separate members.
