Abstract: The invention provides a quaternary ammonium salt (7-I-2), a liquid softener composition that contains a quaternary ammonium salt (7-I), is sufficiently satisfactory in respect of shelf stability and water absorbency, has an excellent biodegradability, and is nondestructive of the natural environment, and a quaternary ammonium salt (7-I). The softener composition contains 3-40 wt.% of a quaternary ammonium salt (7-I) represented by general formula (7-I) wherein R1 represents C¿20?-C44 alkyl or alkenyl; R?2, R3 and R4¿ represent each C¿1?-C5 alkyl or hydroxyalkyl; Y represents C2-C4 alkylene; m represents a number of 0 to 20; n represents an integer of 1 to 6; and X?-¿ represents an anionic group. The salt (7-I-2) is a compound represented by formula (7-I) wherein R?1 is R1-2¿ (a C¿36?-C44 alkyl or alkenyl group).

CONSTITUTION:One mole of (A) and 0.3-1.2 moles of (B) are mixed wherein (A) is a quat. ammonium salt represented by the formula I or II (R1, R2 are 9-27C aliph. alkyl; R3-5 are 1-3C alkyl, benzyl, or epichlorohydrin residual gp.; X is halogen, 1-3C alkyl-contg. monoalkyl sulfate gp.; m n are 2-4) and (B) is an anionic surfactant selected from (a) 10-18C alkyl contg. alkylbenzenesulfonic acid (salt), (b) 10-30C alkylbenzenesulfonic acid (salt), (c) 10-20C alkyl sulfate (salt), (d) 8-20C alkyl contg. mono- or di-alkyl phosphate (salt), and (e) dialkylsulfosuccinic acid (salt) derived from 8-22C aliph. alc. (with counter ion constituting salt being alkali metal, ammonium, or 3C or less alkylamine).
