    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the recording medium consisting of alternately laminated films of small lamination periods by rotating a substrate so as to alternately pass the side parts of the space between rare earth metal targets and the space between transition metal targets and executing an electric discharge under a vacuum condition. CONSTITUTION:The substrate 7 is set in the position apart from a revolving shaft of a substrate holder 6 in the process for producing the recording medium by alternately laminating the transition metals and the rear earth metals on the substrate. The substrate holder 6 is then rotated and gas, such as Ar, is introduced from a gas introducing system 8. Electric powers are charged to the rare earth metal targets 3a, 3b of a rectangular shape and the transition metal targets 4a, 4b of a rectangular shape to generate the sputters by the electric discharge, by which the rare earth metals and the transition metal are alternately laminated on the substrate 7. Plasma is sealed into the space between two sheets of the targets facing each other by the magnetic field formed by magnets 9 at this time. The mixing of the atoms at the boundaries of the laminated layers is decreased in this way. The alternately laminated films of the small lamination periods are thus formed as the recording layer. The recording medium of high C/N is thus easily produced.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To enhance the heating efficiency of the medium and a recording sensitivity and to allow the high-speed transfer of data by aggregating and forming the many grain lumps of a thin film material along the surface of a substrate and forming heat propagation releasing regions between the adjacent grain lumps. CONSTITUTION:The thin film of the optical recording medium which allows the recording of information by irradiating the thin film formed on a transparent substrate 3 with a laser beam thereby heating the thin film and changing the magnetization, crystallinity or shape of the thin film is constituted of the columnar or planar grain lumps 1 of 5 to 100nm sizes on the base and the heat propagation releasing regions of such gaps 2 or the like which hinder the propagation of the heat between the grain lumps are provided between the grain lumps and the grain lumps. Such film is small in thermal conductivity as compared with ordinary films. The heating efficiency by the laser beam is enhanced if this film is used for the heat mode optical recording medium. The optical information medium having the high heating efficiency and the excellent recording sensitivity is obtd. in this way.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide an optical recording medium light in weight, free of toxicity, having excellent stability and easy to produce, by using a polished carbonaceous material for a recording layer, and utilizing variations in the Raman spectrum caused by irradiation with laser beams for recording information. CONSTITUTION:A recording layer is constituted of a carbonaceous material, and it is preferable that a base and the recording layer are constituted of the same carbonaceous material. The carbonaceous material means a material consisting solely of carbon or comprising carbon as a main constituent, such as an extremely highly crystalline and highly oriented carbon, coke, vitreous carbon confirmed to be amorphous by X-ray analysis and carbon black in which ultra fine particles are aggregated. Particularly preferably, a vitreous carbonaceous material is used. Information is written into and read from a optical recording medium by a laser beam. A laser light source may be, for example, a neon, helium-cadmium, argon, helium-neon, ruby or semiconductor laser device.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve both coercive force and remanence ratio by impinging ions on an artificial lattice film, which is formed by alternately laminating Co layers and Pt layers and/or Pd layers by a focusing-target puttering method, by using inverse sputtering and the like. CONSTITUTION:A pair of Co targets 2a and 2b and a pair of Pt targets 3a and 3b are arranged so as to face at the upper and lower parts, respectively. A negative electrode is attached to each target. A pallet 4 is arranged for these targets at a right angle. Four disk-shaped glass substrates 5, 6, 7 and 8 are arranged at positions at the interval of 90 deg.. An artificial lattice film having the pattern comprising the Co layers/Pt layers is formed. The structure of the laminated layers is checked. The sides of the substrates 5, 6 7 and 8 are attached to the negative electrodes. Inverse sputtering is performed by using Ar gas.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve the smoothness of a film surface as well as vertical magnetic anisotropy by providing a shield for shielding a magnetic field between an opposite target space and a substrate. CONSTITUTION:A plurality of targets T1 and T2 are disposed so as for sputtered surfaces thereof to face each other with a space separated therebetween, and a substrate 1 is disposed on the side of the space formed between the targets T1 and T2. A magnetic thin film is formed on the substrate 1 by applying a magnetic field substantially perpendicularly to the sputtered surfaces and causing sputtering by electrical discharge. Further, a mesh shield 6 is provided between the space formed between the targets and the substrate 1, for shielding the magnetic field. Hereby, the magnetic field is prevented from being applied parallely to a substrate 1 surface in the vicinity of the same, and hence a magnetic thin film with greater vertical magnetic anisotropy can be yielded.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide an optical recording medium capable of high-density recording, free of toxicity, having excellent stability and enabling information to be recorded and reproduced using a device of simple construction, by using a thin film of light-absorbing amorphous carbon as a recording layer, and using optically penetrating holes formed by irradiation with laser beams as recording pits. CONSTITUTION:To record information in the optical recording medium, a laser beam modulated by a signal indicative of the information is focused on a recording layer to locally raise the temperature with the result of evaporation of carbon, thereby providing the recording layer with holes which penetrate substantially the entire thickness of the recording layer on an optical basis. A base 1 of the medium may be formed from polymethacrylic acid, a polycarbonate, quartz, a ceramic or the like. An organic resin is preferably used as a material for the base 1, from the viewpoints of safety, lightness in weight, workability and the like. A thin film layer 2 of amorphous carbon can be provided on the base 1 by sputtering, vapor growth, vacuum deposition, ion plating or the like.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To produce the recording medium having high recording characteristic and reliability by forming one of a couple of recording layer forming targets with a rare-earth metal and the other with a transition-metal alloy and arranging an electric circuit capable of independently varying the electric energy to be supplied to each target. CONSTITUTION:The one target 8 between the opposed targets is formed with terbium Tb (having >=99.9% purity) and the other target 9 with FeCo (having the composition of Fe:Co=92:8 atomic % and >=99.9% purity) in a recording sputtering chamber 3, DC power sources 16 and 17 are independently arranged respectively on the target 8 side and on the target 9 side to vary the ratio of the electric power to be supplied to the target 8 to that to the target 9, and a TbFeCo film is formed by this method in which the two targets are simultaneously sputtered. A desired recording layer is obtained by varying the electric energy to be supplied to each target. Namely, the characteristic of the magneto-optical recording medium using the rare-earth metal-transition metal alloy is fully exhibited, and a high-quality film is obtained.
