Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the title composition improved in capability of cleaning a fuel inlet system and a combustion chamber by using an amine(oxide) and a specified compound as the constituents. CONSTITUTION:The title composition is obtained by mixing 1-50wt.% amine(oxide) which has a 3-18C alkyl branch, alkyl having a total number of carbon atoms including those of the branch of 9 to 37, and at least one 2-4C oxyalkylene group (e.g. 2-tetradecyloctadecyloxypropylamine); 1-30wt.% compound of formulas I, II or III (wherein R to R are each 15-100C alkyl or alkenyl; A is a group of formula IV or V; p is 1 to 3; q is 0 to 5; X1 is H or of formula VI; X2 is H or a group of formula VII; X3 is H, 15-100C alkyl or alkenyl), having a molecular weight of 700 to 5,000; and 50-98wt.% mineral oil or synthetic oil [e.g. (hydrogenated) polybutene having a molecular weight of 400 to 2,000]. 0.1-50,000ppm of this composition is incorporated into fuel oil.

CONSTITUTION:A copolymer (A) of the formula (either of R1 and R2 is a hydrogen atom and the other a 28-58 C alkyl group and n is a number-average degree of polymerization of 2-50) is obtd. by reacting a 30-60 C alpha-olefin with maleic anhydride in a molar ratio of 0.5-1:1-0.5 in the presence of a radical initiator at 60-200 deg.C for 1-20hr. Then, an amine or a light metal hydroxide (e.g., NaOH)is added to (partial) esterification product obtd. by reacting the copolymer (A) with a 6-15 C aliphatic alcohol (e.g., n-hexanol) in an A to B weight ratio of 1:1-5 in the presence of a catalyst (e.g., p- toluenesulfonic acid) at 50-150 deg.C for 2-10hr, and heated at 80-150 deg.C, thereby affording an additive for fuel oil comprising an amine salt or a light metal salt of the (partial) esterification product. This additive is added to a fuel oil in an amt. of 10-10,000ppm.
