Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain both a surfactant, comprising a quaternary ammonium salt, excellent in softness and good in biodegradability and a liquid softening and finishing agent composition containing the surfactant. SOLUTION: This surfactant comprises a quaternary ammonium salt represented by formula I (R is a 16-18C alkyl or alkenyl; R is a 14-16C alkyl or alkenyl). The surfactant comprises 50 to and R is >=32 in the compound represented by formula I or comprises more preferably 25 to and R is >=34 in the compound represented by formula I. Furthermore, the liquid softening and finishing agent composition capable of imparting excellent softness and elasticity to various fibers is obtained by including 2-40wt.% surfactant therein. The compound represented by formula I is prepared by carrying out the esterification of a branched alcohol of formula II with thonochloroacetic acid, providing a haloester of formula III and then reacting the resultant haloester of formula III with trimethylamine.

The total content of the components (A) and (E) is 4-45wt.% based on the composition.
