    Abstract: A numbering device 1 for carrying out numbering in sheet-fed or web-fed numbering presses is disclosed. The numbering device 1 comprises a numbering unit 6 with rotatable numbering wheels 7 carrying alpha-numerical symbols thereon. The numbering device 1 includes electro-mechanical actuation means for 5 setting the position of the numbering wheels 7 which are mechanically autonomous. The electro-mechanical actuation means comprises a plurality of independent driving means (15, 18-23; 23*) for actuating a corresponding plurality of the numbering wheels 7. Each independent driving means comprises an electric motor driving the associated numbering wheel 7 through a gear-wheel assembly 10 which exhibits a reduction factor (Rz). Each electric motor is coupled to the gear wheel assembly via a reduction gear which provides an additional reduction of the output speed and an additional increase of the output torque of the electric motor. 15 Figure 4 for publication 3 j4
