There is described a sheet-fed printing press for numbering and varnishing of security documents, especially banknotes, including: - a sheet-feeder (01) for feeding in succession printed material in the form of individual sheets carrying multiple security imprints ; - a numbering group (02) comprising at least one numbering unit (21, 22) for numbering the sheets ; - a varnishing group (03) located downstream of the numbering group (02) for applying varnish onto recto and verso sides of said sheets, the varnishing group (03) comprising at least a first varnishing unit (31) for applying varnish on the recto side of the sheets and at least a second varnishing unit (32) for applying varnish on the verso side of the sheets ; and - a sheet-delivery system (04) for collecting varnished sheets coming from the varnishing group (03), the numbering group (02) being coupled to the varnishing group (03) by means of an intermediate sheet gripper system (05) comprising space-apart gripper bars for holding the sheets by a leading edge of the sheets and transporting the sheets from the numbering group (02) to the varnishing group (03).

There is described an impression cylinder (01) for intaglio printing of security documents, especially banknotes, comprising a cylinder body (10) carrying at least one blanket (20) on its circumference, and a packing (30) disposed between the cylinder body (10) and the blanket (20). The packing (30) exhibits at least one depression (40) whose location is selected to correspond to the location of at least a selected portion of a corresponding security element (50) having optical and/or structural properties to be preserved, which security element (50) is provided or exposed on a backside (60b) of a substrate (60) to be supported against the blanket (20) during intaglio printing, the said at least one depression (40) being designed to lead to a local reduction of the printing pressure at the location of the said at least selected portion of the corresponding security element (50).

There is described a sheet numbering process involving feeding of individual sheets (S) in succession, which individual sheets (S) each carry a plurality of imprints (P) that are arranged in a matrix of rows and columns, and providing unique serial numbers to multiple ones of the plurality of imprints (P) carried by the individual sheets (S). The sheet numbering process comprises numbering of at least some of the individual sheets (S), wherein numbering of the individual sheets (S) is selectively commutable between a first numbering scheme (N1) and at least a second numbering scheme (N2; N2'; N*), different from the first numbering scheme (N1), without interruption of the numbering process. The first numbering scheme (N1) involves providing all imprints (P) of a first subset (S 0 ) of individual sheets (S) with a unique serial number (SN1) of the first numbering scheme (N1). The second numbering scheme (N2; N2'; N*) involves providing all or part of the imprints (P) of a second subset (S'; S*) of individual sheets (S) with a unique serial number (SN2; SN2'; SN*) of the second numbering scheme (N2; N2'; N*). Also described is a sheet-processing machine for carrying out the aforementioned sheet numbering process.
