Abstract:
A system manages a machine tool operation. The system includes a cutting tool (10), which includes a tool body (15) having a shank (16); an integrated circuit chip (20) securely mounted within the shank (16) of the tool body (15) and capable of being read and written upon; and a read/write device (700) for communicating with the integrated circuit chip (20). The integrated circuit chip (20) is an RFID chip (20).
Abstract:
A metalcutting insert (150) that is useful in chipforming and material removal from a workpiece. The metalcutting insert (150) includes a metalcutting insert body (152, 154), which includes a cutting edge (160) having at least one discrete cutting location (161A-161F). The metalcutting insert body (152, 154) further contains a distinct interior coolant passage (300) communicating with the discrete cutting location (161A-161F). The distinct interior coolant passage (300) has a coolant passage inlet (304) defining a coolant passage inlet (304) cross-sectional area, a coolant passage discharge (302) defining a coolant passage discharge (302) cross-sectional area, and an axial coolant passage length. The distinct interior coolant passage (300) defines a coolant flow cross-sectional area along the axial coolant passage length thereof. The coolant passage inlet (304) cross-sectional area is substantially the same as the coolant passage discharge (302) cross-sectional area. The geometry of the coolant flow area changes along the axial coolant passage length.

A system manages a machine tool operation. The system includes a cutting tool, which includes a tool body; an integrated circuit chip securely mounted within the tool body and capable of being read and written upon; and a read/write device for communicating with the integrated circuit chip. The integrated circuit chip is an RFID chip. The tool body may be a mounting chuck, adapter, twist drill, thread tap, indexable drill, milling cutter or a square shank lathe tool.
