Abstract: A roof drill bit assembly comprising a roof drill bit (20) and a chuck (50). The roof bit contains a cavity (28) which opens at the rearward end thereof. Upon assembly the bit (20) and the chuck (50), the cavity (28) receives the axially forward end of the chuck. A sealing member is between the roof drill bit (20) and the chuck (50) so as to provide a fluid-tight connection between the chuck (50) and the roof bit (20).

Abstract: A cutting bit (10) useful in construction and/or mining and a socket mount (14) to rotatably support the cutting bit (10). The socket mount (14) includes a bore (16) having a cylindrical shape and either a conical opening (18) or a substantially cylindrical opening at a front end thereof. The cutting bit (10) includes a working head (22) having a shoulder (24) and a shank (26) of circular cross section depending from the working head (22). The shoulder (24) may be either chamfered or straight. The shank includes a spacer (30) contiguous with the shoulder (24) of the working head (22), an annular recess (32) contiguous with the spacer (30), and an annular retainer (34) contiguous with the annular recess (32). The shoulder (24) and the spacer (30) substantially conform to the size and shape of the interior surface of the socket mount (14) at the juncture of the opening (18) and cylindrical shaped bore (16). A spring sleeve (12) is disposed within the annular recess (32).

Abstract: A rotatable cutting tool (10) having a tool body (12) with a socket (26) contained in the forward end thereof wherein a hard insert (32) is affixed to the tool body (12) within the socket (26). The hard insert (32) comprises an integral tip portion (34) and an integral cylindrical flange portion (42) joined to the tip portion (34) by integral mediate portion (36, 38, 40). An integral boss (50) projects from the bottom surface (44) of the flange portion (42) wherein the boss (50) is of a generally frusto-conical shape which corresponds to the generally frusto-conical volume defined by the socket (26). A plurality of dimples (60, 64) projects from the bottom surface (44) of the flange portion (42) and the frusto-conical surface (52) of the boss (50) to provide for a braze joint of uniform thickness between the hard insert (32) and the tool body (12).
