Abstract: Polyphosphoric acids of high concentration are prepared by the combustion of elementary phosphorus with air or other oxygen-containing gas, and absorbing the phosphorus pentoxide so formed in phosphoric acid, wherein the major amount of the heat set free during the combustion reaction is removed by phosphoric acid circulated in a first circuit through a reaction zone comprising a first absorption zone and through a suitable cooling system, a part of the phosphorus pentoxide formed being absorbed simultaneously with removal of heat and concentration, and the residual portion of the phosphorus pentoxide is absorbed in a polyphosphoric acid circulating in a second circuit through a second adsorption zone and a suitable cooling system, wherein the polyphosphoric acid employed in the second circuit has a higher concentration of phosphorus pentoxide than that in the first circuit. The temperature of operation is preferably below 180 DEG C. especially 60-140 DEG C. The concentration of the acids in the circuits may be maintained constant by addition of water and/or commercial phosphoric acid, that added to the second circuit conveniently being acid withdrawn from the first circuit. Abstract: Alkali metal phosphates are manufactured from alkali metal chlorides, suspended in air and/or O2, phosphorus, in the form of a flame, and oxygen, with or without water, by feeding the reactants into a zone parallel to and concentric with each other, whereby the alkali metal chloride is atomized in the hottest interior point of the phosphorus flame produced by reacting molten phosphorus with air and/or O2 using 90-5001. O2/100g. P, the oxygen, when the reaction is proceeding without the addition of water, being fed in at least such amount as to ensure oxidation of the chloride ion to free chlorine. The reaction products are discharged as a hot melt which may be cooled and ground and dissolved in water or unsaturated aqueous phosphate solution to give crystalline phosphate, e.g. tri-, pyro- or orthophosphates. The molar ratio of P2O5 to alkali metal oxide may be 1:1-2. Burner 5 in Fig. 1 is a multi-component mixing nozzle comprising four tubes fed by NaCl suspended in p O2 at 1, molten P at 2, O2 at 3 and steam may be at 4. Burner 5 is placed central in tower 6, the inner walls of which are cooled by air or water thereby forming a protective layer of reaction product on the walls. The melt formed is discharged through line 7 to a cooling roll 8 or through line 9 to a vessel 10, where it may be dissolved in water with stirring. The exhaust gas from tower 6 is passed through 11 to absorption tower 12 where it is sprayed with conc. phosphoric acid, recycled by rotary pump 14 from collecting vessel 13. Gas, freed from alkali metal phosphate and/or P2O5, is led through 16 to a unit 18 for HCl production, alternatively if H2O was used in the reaction, the exhaust gas is led through 17. The HCl is absorbed in 19 by aqueous HCl and the residual gases are removed to chimney 22. If the amount of exhaust gas produced is small and if HCl is not required to be isolated, the exhaust gas can be passed through a tower filled with lime only.
