Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a cheap oil coagulant made of carboxymethylated wool by which effluent oil on the sea can be recovered without secondary pollution when it is applied to an accident with effluence of oil. CONSTITUTION:Carboxymethylated wool is used as an effluent oil treating agent. This agent can be produced by swelling waste animal hair discharged at the time of producing wool, waste wool or leather, or feathering of birds such as a chicken with a conc. alkali soln., pref. a 20-30% caustic soda soln., followed by carboxymethylation with monochloroacetic acid. The amt. of caustic soda used is pref. equimolar-several times as much as the amt. of animal hair, etc. by mol and that of monochloroacetic acid 1/2-several times as much by mol. At this time, 162 g of wool are considered to be 1 mol in accordance with the custom of production of CMC.
