    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a Schottky junction type organic colorant photovoltaic element which has large photoelectric energy conversion efficiency and which is particularly rapid in photoresponse to blue light by using a special coumarin colorant film as a P type semiconductor layer and aluminum as blocking electrodes. CONSTITUTION:A coumarin colorant film represented by formula II or III is used as a P type semiconductor layer, and aluminum is used as a blocking electrode. In the formula, R1 is carboxylic group or carboxymethyl group, R2 is phenyl, or benzothiazolyl group, and R3 and R4 are hydrogen atom, methyl group or ethyl group. The above photovoltaic element is formed as follows. An aluminum deposited film is formed on a transparent substrate 1. The film 2 is a blocking electrode in a Schottky junction, and is also used as to introduce a light into the element. Accordingly, it is formed of a translucent film which passes 5-50% of visible light. Then, a coumarin colorant film 3 is formed on the film 2. This film 2 can be formed by means normally used in case of forming a thin film on the substrate 1 such as a sprayer, a flowing solvent method, a vacuum deposition or a projetting arbitrarily.
