Abstract: In a method for calculating the soft bit values for decoding bits in a communication system for encoding the bits and using gray coding to perform M-ary modulations, the soft bit values of a received signal are calculated based on the shortest distance between the received signal, a phase distortion of which having been compensated, and a boundary line for distinguishing '0' and '1' decision regions. According to the present invention, the computation volume for calculating the soft bit values is greatly reduced and the cost for implementing corresponding hardware is decreased. Also, when a plurality of boundary lines is provided, the soft bit values are calculated by symmetric movements, and the corresponding calculation complexity is greatly reduced.
