Abstract: 975,256. Welding by pressure. KSM PRODUCTS Inc. Jan. 24, 1961 [Feb. 3, 1960], No. 2816/61. Heading B3R. [Also in Division H2] In stud welding, the stud is contacted with the workpiece, current is passed between the stud and workpiece while withdrawing the stud to create an initial low current arc and the stud is moved towards the workpiece to extinguish the low current arc and after the stud and workpiece renew contact the stud is urged towards the workpiece and welding current of high value is passed through the stud and workpieee to melt adjacent portions thereof. In an embodiment the stud welding gun comprises a plastic housing 10, Fig. 1, carrying a tripod foot mounting 16, 17, 18 and slidably mounting a stud carrier 22 having a sleeve 24 urged outwardly by a spring 58 and a solenoid armature 26 carrying a ball locking device. The locking device includes a sleeve 36 spring-urged outwardly and carrying balls 36 and a wedge member 44 secured to the end of the armature and movable relatively to the balls. The armature slides within a coil 78 having a core 88, the position of the coil and core being adjustable by a cap 90. A switch 92 in the handle connected in the control circuit is actuated by a button 91 and a cable 94 supplies current to the carrier 22. The supply circuit includes a transformer 104, supplied from a 110 v. A.C. source, connected to a fullwave rectifier 102 for charging a welding current capacitor 100. The rectifier is connected to the capacitor through normally closed contacts 194 of a contactor 192, the capacitor being connected to earth and to the welding gun through the normally open contactor contacts 196. A transformer 120 supplies a full-wave rectifier 118, one terminal of which is connected to the capacitor 100 and the other through normally open contacts 172 to the welding gun carrier 22. The control circuit includes the switch 92, a main contactor coil 190 operating the contacts 194, 196 and time delay relays. A rectifier 130 supplies the solenoid coil 78. In operation the operator places a stud, e.g. a bulbous aluminium stud, as shown in Fig. 4, or a ferrous or non- ferrous flat, convex or concave ended stud, in the holder 22, places the gun on the work so that the holder 22 moves freely against the spring 58 relatively to the solenoid armature 26 and operates the switch 92. The coil 78 is energized to cause the armature 26 to move upwardly and thus the wedge 44 to lock the balls against the sleeve 24 so that the armature and stud holder lift together until the sleeve 36 abuts the coil 78. The supply circuit from the rectifier 118 is completed as the stud lifts and a low current arc is drawn. After a delay determined by a time delay relay the solenoid 78 is deenergized and the stud is thrust by the spring 58 into the work to extinguish the arc, the supply circuit from the rectifier 118 being then broken. The main contactor contacts 196 are then closed so that capacitor 100 discharges through the stud and work, creating a main arc. A time delay relay thereafter causes the contacts 196 to be opened.
