[Also in Divisions B5, C3 and D1] A microporous sheet is prepared' by (a) dissolving in a solution of a polymer containing at least 50 wt% of a polyurethane elastomer in an organic solvent a coagulation regulating agent which is selected from the list given below, being soluble in the solvent and insoluble in the coagulating liquid of (c) below, (b) forming a layer of the resulting solution inside or on the surface of a substratum, (c) treating this layer with a coagulating liquid comprising a non-solvent for the polymer which is at least partially miscible with the solvent, so forming a cellular structure having mutually communicated micropores (d) removing the solvent from the layer, and (e) removing the non-solvent from the layer. The coagulation regulating agent is selected from: (i) C8-31 alkanols, (ii) C8-31 aliphatic carboxylic acids, (iii) C1-6 alkyl esters of C6-18 aliphatic carboxylic acids, (iv) C8-18 alkyl esters of C1-18 aliphatic carboxylic acids, (v) glyceryl mono-, di-, or tri-esters of C10-22 aliphatic carboxylic acids, (vi) sorbitane monodi-, or tri-esters of C10-22 aliphatic carboxylic acids, (vii) C6-22 α, # glycols, (viii) dialkyl ethers having C6-18 alkyl groups, (ix) dialkyl ketones having C6-18 alkyl groups, and (x) aliphatic C8-31 aldehydes. In Examples the polymer solutions are:-a polycaprolactone/ p-p'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (DPMD)/ tetramethylene glycol polyurethane in dimethyl sulphoxide (Example 3); polyethylene-propylene adipate/DPMD/ethylene glycol in dimethyl formamide (DMF) (Examples 5 and 8); polybutylene adipate/DPMD/ethylene glycol/methyl diethanolamine in DMF; as Example 5 with methyl diethanolamine (Example 7); and as Example 6 omitting methyl diethanolamine (Example 9). The coagulation regulation agents are a variety of C8-30 alkanols; lauric, stearic and palmitic acids (Example 3); sorbitane and glyceryl stearates (Examples 8 and 9); and stearaldehyde, dioctadecyl ether, dinonyl ketone, octadecyl stearate and decane diol (Example 5). Coagulation is produced by a 20-50% aqueous solution of the polymer solvent; the solvent is removed with water at 70‹C and the product dried in air at 80‹C. In Examples 3 and 5-9 a substrate (tridemensionalized non-woven nylon or nylon/polystyrene cloth) is impregnated with aqueous solvent or the polymer solution (in Examples 8 and 9) then coated with the polymer solution, then treated as above to give synthetic leathers.
