Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a non-quartz type base material for an optical fiber by a vapor axial deposition (VAD) method by depositing quartz type oxide on one end of a heat resistant rod before growing non-quartz type porous oxide. CONSTITUTION:Quartz type porous oxide 15 consisting of three components of Si, Ge and P is deposited on one end of a heat resistant rod 14 by a VAD method. On the oxide 15 non-quartz type finely powdered oxide 16 consisting of Ge and Sb is similarly deposited and grown to form non-quartz type porous oxide 17 extending in the longitudinal direction of the rod 14. The oxide 17 is converted into transparent glass material by heating to a high temp. Thus, a non-quartz type base material for an optical fiber is obtd. by a VAD method.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To maintain the low temp. of an oxyhydrogen flame without decreasing the force of the fire and to obtain a titled base material having good quality by supplying gaseous H2 diluted with inert gas to an oxyhydrogen burner in a combustion state forming pulverous glass powder. CONSTITUTION:Bubbling gas is blown into the liquefied raw materials 10a, 10b in raw materials tanks 9a, 9b from bombs 11a, 11b and the evaporated raw materials of gaseous phase are supplied to the 1st flow passage (central flow passage) of an oxyhydrogen burner 4. Gaseous H2 is supplied from a bomb 13 to the 2nd flow passages, sealing gas from a bomb 17 to the 3rd flow passage and gaseous O2 from a bomb 18 to the 4th flow passage, respectively in synchronization with said supply so as to be burned by the burner 4. The pulverous glass powder formed by the flame hydrolysis reaction of the raw materials of gaseous phase are injected onto a target 3 under rotation to be deposited thereon and the target is risen in synchronization with the growth of a porous base material 19. The inert gas in a bomb 15 is stirred and mixed with the gaseous H2 by means of a mixer 14. The temp. of the oxyhydrogen flame decrease in the burner 4 by as much as the concn. of the gaseous H2 is decreaed and the force of the fire is substantially assured without weakening of the gaseous flow.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To carry out the feed of the titled raw materials without causing the variation in the composition of the liquefied raw materials of chloride, by dividing the raw material tank into plural raw material chambers connected with each other under the liquid level of the raw material, and introducing chlorine gas into the liquefied liquid raw material in a chamber different from the chamber to supply to the reaction system. CONSTITUTION:The liquefied raw material 9 in the raw material chambers 3a, 3b is maintained to a proper temperature by heating the raw material tank 1. An inert gas is introduced through the bubbling pipe 4a into the liquefied raw material 9 in one raw material chamber 3a, and chlorine gas is bubbled through the bubbling pipe 4b into the liquefied raw material 9 in the other raw material chamber 3b. The vaporized raw material 9' generated in the raw material chamber 3a is supplied to a definite reaction system through the supplying port 6. When the liquefied raw material 9 is SbCl5, the SbCl5 is supplied to the reaction system as the vaporized raw material 9', and is dechlorinated to SbCl3, however, it is converted again to SbCl5 by blasting chlorine gas thereto. Consequently, SbCl5 can be stably supplied to the reaction system.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain transparent glass not causing crystallization in spite of the low Sb2O3 content by sintering a porous deposit of GeO2 and Sb2O3 formed by flame hydrolysis. CONSTITUTION:GeCl4 and SbCl5 are heated and bubbled with an inert gas to generate satd. vapor of GeCl4 and SbCl5 in the gas. This gaseous mixture is introduced into an oxyhydrogen flame to cause flame hydrolysis. By depositing the resulting fine powder of a GeO2-Sb2O3 mixture, a porous mass is formed. The mass is converted into transparent glass by sintering. Thus, transparent glas not causing crystallization in spite of the very low Sb2O3 content is obtd.
