Abstract: 114,458. Laing, C. March 27, 1917. Comparison photometers for use in photography to determine exposure data comprise means whereby daylight is compared with a standard light, shutter devices being provided so that the light emanating from one source is increased while that from the other is decreased and vice versa. Mounted in a cylindrical casing are two fixed shutters 6. 19, Figs. 1 and 10, having angular openings 8, and two revolving shutters 9, 17 formed with openings 12, of the shape shown in Fig. 3, but oppositely arranged. These latter shutters are mounted in a slotted cylinder 15, which can be revolved by a finger piece 10, so that the amount of daylight entering from one end is decreased or increased at the same time that light entering from an electric lamp 23 is increased or decreased. Excess red rays from the lamp are absorbed by a suitable screen carried by the shutter 19. Equality of light entering from both sources is judged by means of a comparison device consisting of a tube 40 fixed in the casing and passing through the slot in the cylinder 15. Mounted in the lower end of the device are two translucent blocks 35 separated by a tin foil diaphragm and observed through a lens 39. A pointer carried by the part 10 moves over a suitable scale carried by the instrument.

Abstract: 126,474. Laing, C. May 11, 1918. Casting processes; moulding processes; flasks.- In casting gold or other high - temperature fusing metal under gas pressure, a crucible 12 of impervious material is used having a sprue hole 13 of comparatively large diameter, which allows of the use of several sprue wires 10 passing to different patterns 11 or to one large pattern. It also facilitates the escape of steam and gases during the dissipation of the wax pattern and the drying of the mould, and after the casting operation, the separation of the metal button and sprues from the crucible. In forming the investment, the crucible 12 is placed in an inverted position on the positioning ring 5, so that its lower face engages with soft wax 9 in the cup 7, into which the sprue wires 10 are stuck, with the patterns 11 thereon. The investment ring 1 is then placed in position and the investment material 4 filled in, closing up the hole 13 round the sprue wires.
