The present invention relates to a broadcast signal transmission method comprising the steps of: formatting input streams into at least one data transmission channel; encoding data corresponding to each of the data transmission channels transmitting service data or service component data; generating at least one signal frame comprising the encoded data; modulating the at least one signal frame by means of an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) scheme; and transmitting a broadcast signal comprising the at least one modulated signal frame.

The apparatus for transmitting broadcast signals, the apparatus comprises an encoder to encode service data corresponding to each of a plurality of physical paths, a time interleaver to the encoded service data in each physical path by a TI (Time Interleaving) block, wherein at least one virtual FEC block is ahead of FEC blocks in at least one TI block, wherein each TI block includes a variable number of FEC blocks of the encoded service data, wherein a number of the at least one virtual FEC block is defined based on a maximum number of FEC blocks of a TI block, a frame builder to build at least one signal frame including the time interleaved DP data, a modulator to modulate data in the built at least one signal frame by an OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex) scheme and a transmitter to transmit the broadcast signals having the modulated data.

The broadcast signal transmitting method according to the present invention comprises the steps in which: an input formatting block formats input streams into a plurality of physical layer pipes (PLPs); an encoder encodes the data in the plurality of PLPs; a time interleaver time-interleaves the encoded data in the plurality of PLPs, wherein the time-interleaving step comprises a step in which a cell interleaver cell-interleaves the encoded data by changing the order of the cells in one forward error correction (FEC) block in the plurality of PLPs; a framer frame-maps the time-interleaved data into at least one signal frame; and a waveform block waveform-modulates the mapped data of the at least one signal frame, and may comprise the modulated data.

The method includes, formatting, by an input formatting block, input streams into plural PLPs(Physical Layer Pipes); encoding, by an encoder, data in the plural PLPs; time interleaving, by a time interleaver, the encoded data in the plural PLPs, wherein the time interleaving includes: cell interleaving, by a cell interleaver, the encoded data by permuting cells in a FEC(Forward Error Correction) block in the plural PLPs; frame mapping, by a framer, the time interleaved data onto at least one signal frame; and waveform modulating, by a waveform block, the mapped data in the at least one signal frame and transmitting, by the waveform block, broadcast signals having the modulated data.
