    Abstract: An apparatus and a method for converting data, and an apparatus and a method for driving an image display device using the same are provided to enhance image quality by extending a grayscale in a grayscale overlay portion. An apparatus for converting data includes a grayscale detection unit(200) and a grayscale compensation unit(210). The grayscale detection unit detects the same grayscale between vertical and horizontal adjacent pixels in M-bit data, which is input from outside. The grayscale compensation unit compensates the same grayscale according to a detection signal from the grayscale detection unit and generates N-bit data according to the compensation. The grayscale detection unit includes a line memory(202) and a grayscale analyzing unit(204). The line memory stores the M-bit data for every horizontal line units. The grayscale analyzing unit analyzes the M-bit data from the line memory and generates the detection signal including grayscale detection and grayscale variation signals.
