Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an unmanned water vehicle to carry out tasks which would be tedious, expensive or dangerous to carry out using a vehicle operated by human beings.SOLUTION: The wave-powered water vehicle includes: a surface float 11; a submerged swimmer 21; and a tether 31 which connects the float and the swimmer, so that the swimmer moves up and down as a result of wave motion. The swimmer includes one or more fins 213, 214 which interact with the water as the swimmer moves up and down, and generate forces which propel the vehicle forward. The vehicle, which need not be manned, can carry communication devices 113, 114 and a control device 217 so that it can follow a course directed by signals sent to it, and so that it can record or transmit data from sensors on the vehicle.

Abstract: A fin system, a wave powered water vehicle, a method of controlling a functional component of the water powered vehicle, and a method of recording data is disclosed. The fin system comprises: (a) a frame having a longitudinal axis; (b) a plurality of fins, where each fin is mounted to the frame and is rotatable about an axis of rotation which is transverse to the longitudinal axis of the frame; and (c) at least one elastically deformable component which is not part of a fin, is linked to at least one fin, and changes shape as the fin rotates about the axis of rotation and thus controls or helps to control the rotation of the fin .
