    Abstract: 1422037 Preparing phosphorodithioic acid diesters LUBRIZOL CORP 27 Nov 1973 [8 Dec 1972] 54926/73 Heading C2P [Also in Division C5] A phosphorodithioic acid diester is obtained by reacting at least one hydroxy compound ROH wherein R is selected from hydrocarbyl and substituted hydrocarbyl groups with phosphorus pentasulphide in the presence of a catalytic amount of a nitrogen-containing compound containing at least one group of the formula wherein X is O or S. Specified catalysts of the defined type include N-vinyl pyrrolidone, pyrrolidone, caprolactam, urea, thiourea, ethylene thiourea, ethylene urea, acetamide, benzamide, N,N-dimethyl formamide, oleamide, linoleamide and mixtures of two or more thereof, 5-, 6- and 7-ring-membered lactams being preferred. The hydroxy compound ROH may be a mono-, di- or poly-hydroxy compound or mixture thereof and examples are given in which the hydroxy compounds used are phenol, isooctyl alcohol, dodecyl phenol, 4-methyl-2- pentanol, and a mixture of isobutanol and primary amyl alcohol respectively. The products can be reacted with basic metal compounds to form neutral or basic metal salts, e.g. Ni, Al, Cd, Sn, Pb, Zn, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba or Cu salts.
