    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device that can dynamically exchange data among participants to a phone conference. SOLUTION: A medium exchange monitor in this invention is disclosed; when a call between two concerned parties is made in a phone conference (an adhoc conference) (1), a mixer is incorporated for the call between the two concerned parties, when participants of the phone conference retire from the conference by leaving only the two participants (2), elimination of the mixer is selectively conducted. A packet phone system responds to a request to the phone conference by connecting the mixer to serve the phone conference between the concerned parties. In the case that the participants except the two participants only retire from the conference, the mixer is eliminated from the phone conference. In the case that a change of elimination/adoption of the mixer is required, the medium exchange monitor first inquires of each participant about each capability to realize desirable connection performance.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a method and a device for bandwidth dynamic use assignment in a packet telephone system. SOLUTION: A network monitoring agent 300 that monitors a network condition such as a traffic amount and discriminates a timing to dynamically adjust a coded scheme as to connection is disclosed. The network monitoring agent 300 can select a coding standard on the basis of, e.g. a current network traffic amount, a network error characteristic, a date and time or a weekday. For example, when the network traffic is lighter, the coding standard serving a lower compression and a higher quality level is selected. The network monitoring agent 300 informs a device relating to each connection about a change in the coding scheme.

    Abstract: A media exchange monitor is disclosed that selectively (i) introduces a mixe r into a two-party call when the two-party call becomes a conference call (ad-hoc conference), and (ii) removes the mixer when one or more conference call participants dro p out, leaving only two participants behind. When a party to a two-party call requests to convert the call into a conference call, the packet telephony system respond s to the conference call request by connecting a mixer to service the conference call between the parties. When parties drops out of a conference call, leaving only two parti es behind, the mixer is removed from the conference call. In one implementation, the mixer is removed from the conference call only if the two remaining parties can exchange medi a directly. When the media connection among the parties must be changed to introduce or remove the mixer, the media exchange monitor achieves the desired connectivity by initially querying the parties for their capabilities. Thereafter, the media exchange monitor instructs the parties to establish a direct connection for a two-party call or to connect to the mixer for a conference call. The media exchange monitor processes the results of the capability query to select a compatible compression algorithm.

    Abstract: A network monitoring agent is disclosed that monitors network conditions, such as traffic volume, and determines when to dynamically adjust the encoding scheme for one or more connections. The network monitoring agent can select an encoding standard based on, for example, current network traffic volume, network error characteristics, time of day or day of week. In the illustrative network traffic implementation, an encoding standard that provides a lower degree of compression and a higher quality level is selected at times of lighter network tragic. The network monitoring agent notifies one or both of the devices associated with each connection of changes in the encoding scheme. Generally, both devices must change the compression algorithm at the same time, to ensure proper decoding of received packets. The initiating device inserts a notification in a field of a predefined number of packet headers to inform the recipient device that subsequent packets will be encoded with a different specified encoding algorithm, until further notice. Thereafter, the recipient device can load the appropriate codec to properly decompress and decode the received packets.
