    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a central core optical fiber cable of a low cabling loss having a stack of longitudinally twisted ribbons. SOLUTION: Plural optical fiber ribbons are stacked in an array form and are arranged within a tube existing at the center of the cable. A lubricating material is applied between the adjacent ribbons of the stack 200 in order to integrally holds the plural ribbons and to make the slip movement between the ribbons easy. The stack 200 of the ribbons is twisted along the longitudinal direction of the cable. The lubricant is alpha olefin oil. The stack 200 of the ribbons is twisted to one direction during a first prescribed distance and is then twisted in a reverse direction during a second prescribed distance. These distances are nearly equal to each other. An electrostatically charged powder is otherwise used as the lubricant.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To minimize the load transmitted to a fiber and the displacement forced to the fiber by providing a compliant core unit sealed in a support outer sheath. SOLUTION: This optical fiber cable 10 comprises three compliant core units 20 retained within an outer sheath 30. The core unit 20 comprises six bundled ribbons 24, each ribbon 24 is formed of a bundle of parallel optical glass fibers 22, in which six optical fibers are arranged in a row aligned in the lateral direction of each ribbon 24. Each layer of the ribbons 24 is sealed and supported in a compliant connecting structure consisting of a highly foamable polymer foaming body 26. The foaming body constituting the connecting structure is extruded molded around the layers of the ribbons 24. The core unit 20 is retained in the compressed state by the outer sheath 30, and the core units 20 are freely movable to the sheath 30 and to each other.
