    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and a method for controlling reactions with respect to a power transient phenomenon in a wavelength division multiplex(WDM) network, whose signal is optically amplified during network reconfiguration or on the occurrence of a failure, when a WDM channel is added or deleted. SOLUTION: A variable band width filter circuit 500 is operated by a first prescribed band width for a first period τ0 to detect a change (power transient phenomenon) in a signal power caused by an event of a transient phenomenon and operated by a second specified band width narrower than the first prescribed band width for a period τ0+Δτ after the lapse of the first period to nearly suppress a low level signal change such as a remnant of the power transient phenomenon. Thus, the actual power transient phenomenon is maintained to start amplifier gain control based on the change in input power while the remnant is eliminated by preventing the remnant from being interpreted in mistake as an actual transient phenomenon event phenomenon.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine precisely the operational condition of a stand-by power source, by using a feedback signal as a detection signal, which is generated as a function of both a voltage signal outputted from a power source and a voltage signal supplied to load. SOLUTION: Power sources 100, 200 have voltage paths 211, 212 to load 130 and are isolated by distributed resistors Rd21, Rd22 and diodes D21, D22 having an OR (logical OR) function. The level of the voltage against the ground supplied to the load 130 through the path 121 is detected by detection paths 213 (21), 214 (22) connected to the power sources 100, 200. The power source 100 adjusts the level of the voltage between the path 211 through which the power source itself is outputting and the ground, as a function of a difference between the level or the detected voltage supplied through the detection path 213 (21) and a set voltage Vset121. Likewise, the power source 200 adjusts the level of the voltage outputted by the power source itself, as a function of a difference between the level of the detection voltage supplied through the detection path 214 (22) and a set voltage Vset122.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method are described for controlling response to power transients in an optically amplified wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) network when WDM optical channels are added and dropped, during network reconfigurations, during failure events, and so on. In one embodiment, a variable bandwidth filter circuit operates at a first prescribed bandwidth during a first time period tau 0 to detect a change in signal power (i.e., power transient) caused by a transient event, and operates at a second prescribed bandwidth that is less than the first prescribed bandwidth after the first period of time elapses, e.g., tau 0 + INCREMENT tau , to substantially suppress low level signal variations, such as remnants of the power transient. In this way, the power transient related to the actual transient event will be preserved to trigger control circuitry, e.g., amplifier gain control based on input power changes, while the remnants will be filtered out to prevent unwanted responses by the control circuitry, e.g., remnants misinterpreted as actual transient events.

    Abstract: The monitoring of regulated redundant power supplies is enhanced by returning to each power supply a feedback (sensed) voltage signal that is indicative of the voltage level that the respective power supply is outputting and the voltage level supplied to a system load. In one embodiment, a feedback signal that is supplied to a power supply as the sensed signal is derived using a voltage divider network across the output of the power supply and the common connection at which the outputs of the power supplies are "Ored" for delivery to the system load. A power supply then regulates its output voltage as a function of the level of the feedback signal and the level of a respective preset signal.
