Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a wavelength filter, which reduces the measurements of cost and physical size, accompanying the increase of channel number for treated WDM signals. SOLUTION: The wavelength filter for filtering WDM signals is composed of a demultiplexer, a multiplexer, and a control array that connects the demultiplexer to the multiplexer. Then, at least one element of the control array functions on a plurality of channels for the WDM signals. One of the embodiments is the wavelength filter that filters the WDM signals. Each of the demultiplexer and multiplexer is a grating having free spectral range(FSR) narrower than a wavelength channel span. When the FSR is narrower than the wavelength channel span, the control array treates the wavelength channel in the WDM signals as a set. This generally reduces the physical minimum size that the wavelength filter is asked for.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method/device for filtering an input wavelength-division multiplexed(WDM) signal comprised of N wavelength channels. SOLUTION: A wavelength blocker has a demultiplexer for generating a plurality of demultiplexed output signals from the input WDM signal, and a multiplexer for generating an output WDM signal. In addition, each of the N wavelength channels is selectively passed using a shutter array consisting of a plurality of shutters. In one embodiment of this invention, the demultiplexer is coupled to the multiplexer using a plurality of waveguides having approximately equal length, in order to reduce multipath interference.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To integrate a function of a switch with the function of a waveguide grating router(WGR) and to reduce a size by connecting two pieces of angle dispersion devices having a relative phase shift of non-zero between elements mutually connected with a controllable phase shifter. SOLUTION: This device is provided with the WGRs 110, 120 connected by the phase shifter 140. The WGRs 110, 120 are respectively provided with the non-zero phase shift between them, and are provided with plural pieces of angle dispersion elements (grating arm arrays 113, 123) nearly equally connected to an input port, an output port. Then, the phase shifter 140 carries an image from the grating arm array 113 of the WGR 110 to the image of the same frequency from the grating arm array 123 of the WGR 120, and controls a relative phase between these images for turning a signal from the selected input port in the WGR 110 to the selected output port in the WGR 120.

The double refractive filter device 401 receives first and second forward direction polarized beams and forms first and second elliptically polarized beams. The wrap around device 403 forms four backward direction linearly polarized beams from the first and second elliptically polarized beams. The external interface device 402 forms two output beams having complementary intensity changing periodically together with frequencies from the four backward direction linearly polarized beams.

The input optical device 402 receives a first input optical beams and produces parallet first and second polarized optical beams offset in a first direction and having the same polarization, from the received first input optical beam. The birefringent filter unit 401 receives the first and the second polarized optical beams and produces a first and a second elliptically polarized optical beams. The output optical device 403 combines predetermined beam components of the first and the second elliptically polarized optical beams and produces a first and a second elliptically polarized optical beams. The two output beam have intensities varying inversely, in a periodic manner, as a function of frequency of the input optical beam.

SOLUTION: The double-port waveguide grating router is provided with a first free space area for receiving an optical signal from at least one input waveguide, an optical grating consisting of plural waveguides, a second free space area and plural output waveguides. These plural output waveguides are provided with at least two adjacent waveguides, with a two input 2×2 coupler connected to the two adjacent waveguides, and with the output port of this 2×2 coupler serving as the output port of the waveguide grating router. The double-port waveguide grating router realizes an essentially identical specifiable pass band in the two output ports.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily transmit and manage an optical signal by using an interleave chirped grating waveguide router(WGR) and a phase shifter in a reflector to constitute a programmable wavelength division multiplexer addition/drop device. SOLUTION: With respect to multiple-wave signals received through input lines 1 and 2, all signals having the same signal wavelength are directed to the same output waveguide of waveguide arrays 130 and 130'. For example, when the signal on the line 1 includes four wavelength channels λ1 to λ4, these wavelengths are directed to waveguide groups 131 to 134 of the waveguide array 130, respectively. The wavelength channel λ1 entering the input line 1 (or the input line 2) is switched to one of output lines 1 (or output lines 2) by a phase shifter 140 which controls a relative phase among three connected waveguides for this channel.

SOLUTION: A waveguide grating router is used as a filter for frequency control, and two paths slightly different in length at each selected frequency are configured for the router, forming a DiDomenico type laser which uses a pair of coupled cavities for frequency control. In one application, two pairs, comprising N numbers of optical amplifiers respectively, are used to form two resonation paths at each frequency. In another application, a part of an output power propagates a second path to form a second optical path.
