    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an optical router which is easily producible from a not costly optical fiber element and does not require an optical device or integrated optical element of a bulk type by constituting the optical router of an electronic element (phase controller), a directional coupler made of a fiber, a reflection grating filter made of a fiber, a tap made of a fiber and a phase modulator made of a fiber. SOLUTION: An input wavelength is equally divided to a port 2 and a port 3 by the coupler 10. The phase modulator 12 imparts a small dither signal to the phase of the light from the port 3. A reflector 11A and a reflector 11B returns the one wavelength to the coupler 10 while matching. Both of the two reflected optical powers interfere with each other in the coupler 10 based on their overall phase. The tap 13 samples the interference of the reflected light power and the dither signal. The tap 13 applies the samples of the interference signal and the dither signal to the controller 14. The controller 14 analyzes the dither signal and forms a compensation voltage in the phase modulator 12.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce stimulus Brillouin scattering by, related to an optical fiber system, comprising an integral internal void synthesis reflector, to which tuning voltage and dither signal are added for tuning in broad band. SOLUTION: A semiconductor laser 10 which allows broad band tuning comprises a gain section 12 and an internal void synthesis reflector section 14, and a current driver 16 supplies a current to the gain section 12 for generating an output signal 20. A forward bias DC voltage is supplied to the synthesis reflector section 14 from a bias source 18 for controlling a phase of an optical field in the void inside laser, thus carrier frequency of an output signal is roughly adjusted. Further, the output signal is combined to a transfer medium having tendency to generating stimulus Brillouin scattering(SBS). In order for reducing the SBS, a dither signal of relatively low frequency and low voltage is further added to the synthesis reflector section 14. The spectrum of the output signal is widened for increased SBS threshold.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an optical fiber reducing a loss caused by a stimulated Brillouin scattering by preparing an optical fiber perform having a Ge-doped core, heating a part thereof and performing a draw-forming at a specific drawing force. SOLUTION: This optical fiber is produced by preparing a perform as a glass rod having 1m length and 20-200mm outer diameter and an inside core as a high purity and a low loss silicate containing Ge, having 1-5mm diameter, and an outside clad layer as a glass layer having a lower refractive index than that of the inside core. The end part of the perform is heated at a high temperature and the optical fiber is drawn. The drawing force is changed in accordance with shapes of a sine wave, a triangular wave or a trapezoidal wave along the lengthwise direction of the fiber, and a minimum and a maximum forces therefor are 10-50g and 150-150g respectively. A preferable wave length of the sine wave is 3-30km, a preferable length of the base of the triangular wave is 3-30km, that of the base (longer side) of the trapezoidal wave is 3-15km, and that of the upside (shorter side) thereof is 1-13km.

    Abstract: In accordance with the invention a multiwavelength optical fiber cross connect is provided with an active all-fiber optical router for multiplexing/demultiplexing. The router is comprised of one electronic component -- a phase controller -- and four fiber components: 1) a fiber directional coupler, 2) a fiber reflective grating filter, 3) a fiber tap, and 4) a fiber phase modulator. The application describes how to make optical routers from these components ranging in complexity from a single wavelength drop router to an N-port, N-wavelength router for add/drop multiplexing. The application also describes how optical wavelength routers can be combined to create optical fiber Cross connect (OXCs), ranging in complexity from 2X2 single wavelength OXCs to NXN, M-wavelength OXCs.
