Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the performance of a thermally controllable grating by housing the thermally controllable fiber grating in a heat insulating tube. SOLUTION: A fiber equipped with a thermally controllable grating 11 is housed in a tube 12 such as a cylinder so that heat is insulated. The diameter of the tube 12 is controlled to be large enough to produce a proper space between the tube 12 and the fiber 10 and to avoid the contact of the grating 11 with the tube 12 but to be small enough to avoid generation of large air flow near the grating 11. The inner diameter of the tube 12 is preferably 1 cm or less. The tube 12 is sealed on both ends with elastic (rubber) stoppers 13, 14. A heat reflective coating may be applied on the tube 12 to obtain a better result. By inserting capillary tubes 15, 16 through the stoppers 13, 14, respectively, openings to pass the fiber 10 through the tube 12 are obtd.

SOLUTION: This manufacturing method comprises a step for preparing a shadow mask 32 to specify an optical fiber 30 to be coated and a coating pattern, a step for arranging the shadow mask 32 between a metal source 31 and the fiber 30 to deposit coating metal from the metal source 31 onto the optical fiber 30, and a step for activating the metal source 31 to emit the coating metal and for moving the shadow mask 32 with respect to the optical fiber 30. Travel, onto the optical fiber 30, of the metal of the metal source 31 is controlled therein.
