Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical waveguide tap which can extend the bandwidth and/or improve the resolution for a newly available optical application while keeping its cost efficiency. SOLUTION: An optical monitoring device uses the characteristic of a blazed Bragg grid to change the direction from an axis path to the inside of a detector for some optical signals. In order to increase the strength of a monitor, plural blazed Bragg grids having each peculiar characteristic are used. In particular, N pieces of grids are used for increasing the monitor's bandwidth by N times (as long as no duplication of wavelength occurs between the grids). The resolution is alternatively improved by using the narrower bandwidth and performing measurement in frequency as much as N times of the number of raw data points included in the bandwidth. The combination is attained between the extension of bandwidth and the improvement of resolution via the agreement secured between these two poles. The chirped blaze grids are also available.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical waveguide tap which is inexpensive while enabling provision of an increased band width and/or resolution for optical applications which will newly appear. SOLUTION: An optical monitoring arrangement utilizes the properties of a blazed Bragg grating to redirect a portion of an optical signal out of the axial path and into a detecting device. A plurality of blazed Bragg gratings are utilized each of which has unique properties to increase the robustness of the monitor. In particular, the bandwidth of the monitor may be increased N-fold by utilizing a plurality of N gratings (assuming no overlap in wavelength between gratings). Alternatively, an improvement in resolution can be obtained by utilizing a narrower bandwidth and measuring N times the number of raw data points within that band width. A combination of increase in bandwidth and resolution may be obtained by a compromise between these two extremes. Chirped blazed gratings may also be employed. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
