Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To apply routing to a call in way of minimizing the cost for the call by deciding selection of a public exchange telephone network trunk line or an internet connection in a calling switching system. SOLUTION: Upon the receipt of a request from a master station 25 to set up connection by a calling switch 1, the switch 1 discriminates whether the call is sent via a telephone long distance network 11 that interconnects a calling long distance access switch 1 and a termination long distance access switch 2 or via the Internet 10. When the calling switch 1 decides on the routing of the call via the telephone network 11, the routing is executed in the conventional manner. When routing of the call is decided via the Internet 10, a series of packets are exchanged between the calling long distance access switch 1 and the termination long distance access switch 2, and the calling switch 1 sends an initial address message including a call identifier 41 to the termination switch 2.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for selectively establishing a connection via a telephone network, or via the Internet. A network access switch decides whether to use the telephone network or the Internet. If connections are established using the Internet, the establishment of connection is controlled using existing CCS7 interoffice signaling messages. Advantagesouly, this permits most of the switching control software to be retained and allows the access switches to interface with the present array of operations support systems.
