Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device to be used in a transmitter-receiver or a wireless system capable of carrying out analog mode operation by using a common phase (I) and an orthogonal (Q) value. SOLUTION: In the case of operation in the analog mode, the device is provided with a processor for receiving a pair of digital I and Q related with an audio or data signal, carrying out FM demodulation and generating information contents related with the audio or data signal. In the case of receiving data in the analog mode, data takes a specific format. In order to decode data, a processor recognizes each bit to five-times of repeating of a radio link word(RLW), generates confidence related to each bit and stores it. The confidence is based, on which of 1 or 0 the waveform aproximates and its signal intensity. When the noise of the waveform is comparatively small and the RF signal intensity is comparatively large, the processor assigns a larger weight by judging whether the waveform assigns 1 or 0.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To use the same hardware component in operation in a TDMA mode and an analog mode. SOLUTION: In transmission in the analog mode, a processor 40 encodes the digital expression of a signal to be transmitted, FM-modulates it to an I-Q pair and outputs it to a digital analog converter(DAC) 31. The DAC 31 converts a digital I-Q pair to an analog signal and outputs it to an I-Q cosign wave generator 32 which generates a common-phase cosine wave and an orthogonal cosine wave having amplitude respectively proportional to the values of I and Q. These consine waves are added for transmission by radio. In the case of receiving in the analog mode, a frequency converter down-converts a received radio frequency(RF) to an intermediate frequency(IF). A digital down converter converts the received signal into digital I value and Q value and outputs them to a processor.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for automatically monitoring the trunk a communication system without needing any operator and without interrupting service to the user of the trunk by installing a means for deciding the next trunk to be tested in accordance with a trunk selection algorithm. SOLUTION: The trunk to be tested is selected by a processor 124 or an exchange 118. The processor 124 uses a selection algorithm for selecting the trunk to be tested. The exchange 118 selects the trunk which is directly connected to all the trunks of all user communication links and is decided from a list or from a prescribed trunk order. The trunk of a communication system can periodically or non-periodically and automatically be monitored without using an operator and without interrupting service to the user of the trunk.

Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for use in a transceiver of a wireless system that enable analog mode operations to be performed using in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) values. The apparatus comprises a processor that performs FM modulation to generate I, Q pairs when operating in the analog mode. When transmitting in the analog mode, the processor encodes a digital representation of the signal to be transmitted into I, Q pairs and outputs the I, Q pairs to a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) comprised by the apparatus. The DAC converts the digital I, Q pairs into analog signals and outputs the analog signals to a cosine wave generator, which generates an in-phase cosine wave and an out-of-phase cosine wave having amplitudes that are proportional to the I and Q values, respectively. The cosine waves are summed for transmission over air. When receiving in the analog mode, a digital down converter converts the received signal into digital I and Q values. The processor then demodulates the I and Q values into a digital representation of the received signal to extract the signal content. When transitioning from transmitting data to transmitting audio, and vice versa, the processor ensures that abrupt changes in the phases of the I, Q pairs do not occur.

In order to decode the data, the processor looks at each bit of the data for five repeats of Radio Link Words (RLWs) and generates and stores a confidence factor associated with each bit. The confidence factor is based on how closely the waveform represents a 1 or a 0 as well as the signal strength. If the waveform has relatively little noise and if the RF signal strength is relatively high, the processor assigns more weight to its determination as to whether the waveform represents a 1 or a 0. Once this process has been performed for each repeat of the current RLW, the processor takes the sum of the confidence factors associated with each bit and compares the sum to a threshold level to determine whether the bit is a 1 or a 0. A signaling tone detection routine is utilized to distinguish between when data is being received and when signaling tone is being received.

Abstract: A technique of providing wireless network service utilizes an initial threshold to determine whether a signal received from a cellular device is of sufficient strength to warrant further processing. The technique may be implemented in a power controller of a base station, where the power controller includes an outer loop power control and an inner loop power control. The outer loop power control determines the strength of the received signal and compares it to an initial threshold. If the signal strength is below the initial threshold, the outer loop power control does not process the signal further. However, if the signal strength is above the initial threshold, the outer loop power control determines whether the signal contains any errors. If not, the signal is processed normally. If so, the outer loop power control may increase the signal-to-noise (SNR) threshold of the inner loop power control, which may cause the inner loop power control to attempt to increase the transmission power of the cellular device. By increasing the transmission power of the cellular device, the received signal will typically gain strength, resulting in an error-free signal.
