    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a substance comprising a material exhibiting periodicity by preparing a template comprising colloid crystals, electrochemically depositing a lattice material on the colloid crystals and then removing the colloid crystals. SOLUTION: Colloid crystals comprising polystyrene, polymethyl methacrylate and silica are formed on an electrically conductive substrate. The average grain diameter of the colloid crystals is about 100 nm to 5 μm. A lattice material selected from cadmium sulfide, cadmium selenide, zinc selenide and selenium is electrochemically deposited on the colloidal crystals along a plane which moves in one direction. The colloid crystals are then removed by heating as a coherent nanoparticle structure or by acid etching, e.g. with HF to obtain the objective photonic band gap substance exhibiting substantial periodicity on a micron scale.
