    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To transmit a compressed bit string by arranging m as a source frame of block array coefficients obtained by discrete cosine transformation for each block in the order of perceptive importance so as to select only coefficients out of m of them according to a bit total budget. SOLUTION: A bit budget is set for each block of a frame. Two-dimensional cosine transformation is applied to each block to obtain transformation coefficients Ci ,j of, for instance, i×j=4×4 and m=16. The 16 coefficients are quantized by a prescribed quantization step size. Coefficients compressed through the use of a non-loss variable length compression code such as the Huffman code are generated. Next, the quantized and compressed coefficients are arranged definitely in order without a tie based on perceptive importance (related with the quantity i+j). More important n coefficients within the bit budget area selected and (m-n) coefficients are discharged to constitute a bit string. Thus, the transmission of a quantization step size is unneccessitated.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the method for adaptively formatting communication by which the performance of data transmission on a communication network connecting a data network to a user is enhanced. SOLUTION: An access server 20 formats data and the resulting data are sent to a user 14. The set trans-coding technology is used to encode (or compress) the data and the set error control scheme is used to correct and conceal errors produced in the case of transmission. The trans-coding technology an the error control scheme used for formatting the data are adaptively selected based on characteristics of the communication network connecting to the access server in the data network, the preference of the user, and types of data sent to the user (or access server) or the like.

    Abstract: A method of compressing a source (e.g., a video signal, a still image, an audio signal, etc.) is disclosed that does not require the transmission of changes in the quantization step size and more evenly affects the fidelity of the source than techniques in the prior art that change the quantization step size at various points in the compression process. An illustrative embodiment of the present invention involves transforming a source (e.g., a video frame, audio sample, etc.) into m coefficients, in well-known fashion, wherein each of th e m coefficients is represented by a known number of bits. Then, only n of the m coefficients ar e used for transmission or storage, as appropriate, where the n coefficients are more perceptually significant than the m-n coefficients not used.

    Abstract: The invention discloses techniques for providing automatic retransmission query (ARQ) functions in a communication system. A transmitter in the system applies an input data packet to a first convolutional encoder operating at a first rate to generate an inner code including multiple encoded packets. The encoded packets are interleaved and applied to a second convolutional encoder operating at a second rate which generates an outer code including a transmit packet generated from each of the encoded packets. A first transmit packet is sent to a receiver, which decodes the transmit packet in a Viterbi decoder operating at the second rate to generate a decoded version of the first transmit packet. The decoded version is inverted to provide a first provisional decoding of the input packet. If a cyclic redundancy code (CRC) check of the first provisional decoding is passed, the receiver sends an ACK signal to the transmitter and no retransmission is required. If the check is not passed, the transmitter sends one or more additional transmit packets, which are processed in a manner similar to the first transmit packet to generate one or more additional provisional decodings of the input data packet. If a CRC check of a given one of these additional provisional decodings is passed, the receiver accepts it as the input packet and sends an ACK signal to the transmitter. If none pass the CRC check, the receiver may combine decoded versions of the transmit packets, and apply the result to a Viterbi decoder operating at the first rate to generate another provisional decoding of the input packet. This provisional decoding is accepted as the input packet if it passes a CRC check.

    Abstract: A transmitter applies a data packet to an inner convolutional encoder to generate at least first and second encoded packets 50. The encoded packets are interleaved 52 and applied to an outer convolutional encoder 54 which generates corresponding first and second transmit packets P1, P2. The first transmit packet is sent to a receiver 56 and the second transmit packet stored for possible retransmission 58. The receiver decodes the first transmit packet, de-interleaves and inverts the data to provide a first provisional decoding (102, fig 4). If this is not sufficiently accurate, a retransmission is requested and the transmitter retrieves and sends the second transmit packet (108) which is decoded in similar fashion. The receiver can generate another version of the data by combining outer decoded transmit packets and applying the result to an inner Viterbi decoder (116, 118).
