Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prepare a coated fiber comprising one or more coating layers directly or indirectly located on a fiber wire and at least one heterogeneous region contained in or on the coating layers. SOLUTION: A heterogeneous region 4 comprises preferably a material useful for coding a fiber 1. A preferred example relates to an optical fiber having a first coating layer 2 and a second coating layer 3 and the heterogeneous region 4 defines two or more colored stripes in or on the second coating layer 3. A method for forming the coated optical fiber such as an optical fiber comprises a step of introducing at least the one coating layer 2 or 3 onto the surface of a fiber wire so that at least a part of the surface of the fiber wire is directly or indirectly coated with the one or more coating layers 2 and 3. The method further comprises a step of introducing at least the one heterogeneous region 4 into or onto the coating layers 2 and 3. The fiber can be subjected to, e.g. hardening so as to provide a desired product.
