    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the method capable of connecting a plastic made optical fiber without being polished in a dry state. SOLUTION: An optical fiber is cut while being compressed in the axial direction (while pushing the optical fiber 21 with clamps 22, 23). When the optical fiber is cleaved (cleavage), it is pulled with a high strain rate to be broken after it is notched. The strain rate is set so that strain exists in the elastic zone until breaking or during breaking, that is, the optical fiber is subjected to such a strain rate that the optical fiber has no ductility and shows brittleness during from strain until breaking. The brittle characteristic is required for the smooth trailing end surface for promoting a low loss in unpolishing connection in a dry state.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a connector for connecting plastic optical fibers each other which is easy to be attached in job sites. SOLUTION: A fiber holder which aligns the positions of the end parts of optical fibers and holds the optical fibers and a clamp 26 which selectively tightens the optical fibers and prevents the movement of the optical fibers relative to a connector 10 are included in the connector 10. The connector 10 is allowed to be inserted into a coupler 14 in order to be optically connected to the optical fibers and the optical element which are held by another connector.

    Abstract: The invention relates to plastic optical fiber (POF) processes and systems and involves improved non-polishing termination techniques. The techniques provide good physical and optical characteristics, i.e., smoothness, at the termination point, thereby providing lower losses than conventionally obtained. According to one embodiment, POF is cut while the fiber is under compression. According to another embodiment, the POF is notched and then pulled at a relatively high strain rate to induce fracture. The rate is such that the strain remains in the elastic region, i.e., the fiber exhibits brittle, as opposed to ductile, behavior during the strain. The brittle behavior provides a smooth termination surface, as opposed to a plastically-deformed surface.
