Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color quantizing method capable of performing an image processing algorithm which is of simple and of high speed in calculation in a color symbol level. SOLUTION: This method assigning color symbols to image pixels includes a step selecting a luminance value from the discrete set of quantized luminance values and a step selecting a chrominance value from a discrete set in which quantized chrominance values are arranged orderly and a step constituting color symbols from the index of the selected luminance value and the index of the order position of the selected chrominance value. In this embodiment, respective discrete chrominance values are selected from the Fibonacci lattice on the constant luminance plane in perceptively uniform color space of a Lab or a Luv or the like.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an encoding system combining appropriate redundancy and appropriate disparity by dividing a 16 bit input word into 2 eight bit words and mapping respective bytes on a nine bit word. SOLUTION: A 16 bit input word is divided into two bytes, namely, into two eight twit words. The respective bytes are mapped on the nine bit word. The map of the respective bytes in mapping depends on the disparity and decision whether the map is inverted or not depends on a digital total (RDS) at the time of operating output. A disparity checker 30 calculates a block digital total BDS0 on an input work x0 and a block digital total BDS1 on an input word x1 and inputs them to an algorithm 35. A loop 40 expresses the feedback of a digital total (RDS) at the time of an execution in the algorithm 35 and the value of feedback is equal to the addition of BDS of output at present to a value just before.
