Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a blocking switch module of an N×N degree using switching elements based on an MMI requiring only the minimum number of control elements for executing switching operation by forming a sequential series of switches increasing the sizes of optical switches to be connected in each switch. SOLUTION: An optical space switch is a non-blocking optical switch of an N×N degree provided with a series of connected optical switches 91(2×2), 91(3×3),..., 91(N×N) forming a sequential series of switches of sizes to be increased by one unit in each switch. Since the optical switch is non-blocking, all available combinations of transferring input signals to outputs can be obtained by properly setting up these switches. The sizes of switches are increased by one unit in each switch from a switch of a 2×2 degree up to a final switch of an N×N degree.
